Since their rescue from the San Jose Mine disaster last year, the 33 heroic Chilean miners have been a movie waiting to happen. Finally, it’s official. Producer Mike Medavoy (Black Swan) and his Phoenix Pictures have come to an agreement with the miners to turn their ordeal into a motion picture, according to a joint statement. Though no studio is yet involved, screenwriter José Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries) is working on the script, recounting the 69 days the miners were trapped half a mile under the ground.

“Like millions of people around the world, I was completely engrossed watching the rescue at Copiapó,” said Medavoy, who grew up in Chile. “At its heart, this is a story about the triumph of the human spirit and a testament to the courage and perseverance of the Chilean people. I can’t think of a better story than this one to bring to the screen.”

“One year after the collapse of the mine, we consider this to be a great step towards the realization of a film based on our experience in the mine. This is the only official and authorized film about what we lived in the San José mine. Much of our story has never been told,” said miner Juan Andrés Illanes.

Just you wait: Either all the Chilean miners will be played by white actors affecting some ridiculous quasi-Spanish accent, or the Chilean characters will all be reduced to supporting players in order to have some made-up white character be the main character and the “savior” of the day. Fail.

What do you mean by “white character”?? I’m from Chile and when I see myself in the mirror, I see a white pale face. Remember that Chile is on the far south of the map, behind big, white mountains…

and the worst part is, Johnny Depp will probably play him, then the producers will say that he is 12 % latino, or somesuch nonsense.

What’s interesting, and meant nothing other than to be interesting, is that there are dozens of other mining events that were very similar to and sometimes even more dramatic than this incident and would have cost the producers nothing to produce. Not that its neat the miners will get paid, but lets face it, the producers are paying them out of their own ignorance of mining history as opposed to the goodness of their hearts. Producers are not good and producers do not have hearts.

I sure hope the actors are really Hispanic instead of some Anglo actors with good accents, does Zorro bring anything to mind until Antonio Bandares come into the movies. We know there are more than enough highly qualified Hispanic actors and actresses needing work and this is the perfect picture to show all of their acting abilities such as humor, drama, etc.. Danny Trejo, Jimmy Smits, and hundereds of other excellent actors and actresses. I am looking forward to this as I was riveted to the tv news hoping for their successful recovery.
