Ron Howard will not direct the next Robert Langdon film based on Dan Brown’s best-seller, The Lost Symbol. EW has confirmed a Deadline report that the Oscar-winning director, who directed Tom Hanks in The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, will produce Symbol instead. A spokesperson for Howard says his next directing project will be Rush, a racing movie about 1970s Formula 1 drivers. Howard and Hanks have worked together on four films, including Splash and Apollo 13, but Howard’s reduced involvement should not effect Hanks’ plans. His spokesperson tells EW in an email, “Tom hopes to still play Langdon when and if there is another screenplay.”

Very good. He did not do these books justice. A new director and hopefully a new lead? Could end up being a great film.

While I enjoyed Dan Brown’s books, I don’t think the movies were very good. Hopefully a new director can breathe new life into “Lost Symbol”.
I hope the movie is out in 2012—they are supposed to come out in three year cycles: TDC in ’06, A&D in ’09, and TLS in ’12.
Ron Howard did a terrible job with those movies. Hopefully a new director can bring some life to it.
Just watched Angels and Demons last night for the first time. I’ve read the book and a lot of it was condensed, changed and or left out. The book was fast paced, but the movie felt rushed and not in a good way.
Very true. All the action in Brown’s books are real time, so to fit that into a 2 hour movie makes it a mess. The movies always leave out my favorite science parts too. Phi 1.618, CERN, the Higgs (God particle). Hopefully ‘Symbol’ will mention a little Noetic theory. The bad guy and his back story is cool and should get “movie attention”.
Im reading the book i luv ! I want to see in movie so’
You spelled your name wrong.
I like Ron Howard and Tom Hanks but the pair unfortunelty were just all wrong in this case. There should be a Da Vinci Code re-make. It *could* be a really good movie.
I sure hope Howard is on board to direct The Dilemma 2!
Hopefully Tom Hanks will drop out too… such an awful Robert Langdon.
I remember watching the Da Vinci Code before I read the book and it totally turned me off. Then I read the book and was amazed at how much I loved the book. I wouldn’t mind a new unknown actor to try on Langdon.
I think the only thing he did right in DaVinci Code was casting Ian McKellen as Teabing. Didn’t bother seeing A & D.
Even with the built in audience. With no Ron Howard & no Tom Hanks, there will be no MONEY. (Remember F&F Tokyo Drift anyone??)
Hanks needs to stay! Ron Howard didn’t do much with them, if his heart isn’t in it… it might as well be any director.
The only problem is “The Lost Symbol” is one of the worst books ever. Ron Howard is smart to stay away from this piece of crap. Maybe they should see Michael Bay will direct this, he would feel right at home.
I didn’t think Da Vinci and Angels and Demons were all that great either – in books I mean.
The book was readable BUT I liked Angels and demons the best out of the three.
I loved the book for “The Davinci Code”, but “The Lost Symbol” was like a twinkie. It’s good while you are eating it but once you are done you realize it was just a bunch of empty calories.
Could not agree more. I thought this was a terrible book and I am not at all interested in seeing it turned into a movie. The question should be “Who would want to direct The Lost Symbol”?
The books are written like movies in the sense that they are fast paced with short chapters and limited character development. It doesn’t mean they are not enjoyable, but I can see why those who read the books don’t like the movies.
angels & demongs – ewan mcgregor was a fab villain. he gave excellent death shrieks at the end.
I suggest Jon Turteltaub!
