As anyone who’s seen Helen Mirren sink her fangs into Billy Crystal’s neck in When Harry Met Sally 2 or Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd share a passionate hug in Brokeback to the Future knows, there’s a special pleasure to be found in fake trailers. Now Ben Stiller, who helped popularize the form with the faux previews for The Fatties, Satan’s Alley, and Scorcher 6 at the beginning of his 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder, is recruiting Hollywood’s top talent to create a web series of at least a dozen fake trailers. EW has confirmed that, as first reported by Deadline, Stiller’s Red Hour Digital has already brought in Tropic Thunder co-writer Justin Theroux, Clueless director Amy Heckerling, and Night at the Museum writers Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant for what’s being called The Fake Trailer Project. Stiller’s goal is to get a whole host of actors and filmmakers to spoof a variety of movie genres in faux trailers that will roll out on-line this fall and winter. It’s always nice to see Hollywood laugh at itself. And who knows? Maybe some day one of these fake trailers will eventually turn into a real movie. It’s happened before.

Real movies have been made from fake trailers, like Machete and Hobo With a Shotgun. I wish Ben Stiller would really make a Simple Jack movie. The clips from that was the funniest thing in Tropic Thunder, aside from Robert Downey Jr.
