Eddie Murphy will voice the lead character, Penry, in Alcon Entertainment’s live-action/animated adaptation Hong Kong Phooey, which is based on the 1970s Hanna Barbera cartoon of the same name.
According to a release, the story follows “a mild-mannered dog named Penry [who] stumbles into a mystic ceremony and is accidentally granted mystic powers, including the ability to walk, talk, and do kung fu. Under the tutelage of his kung fu master, Penry dons a costume and becomes Hong Kong Phooey, and with the help of his trusting sidekick Spot the cat cleans up a rogues gallery of wacky criminals.”
Murphy is no stranger to the world of voice acting. The actor voiced Donkey in all four Shrek movies, and he played the wise-cracking dragon, Mushu, in Disney’s Mulan.Â
He needs money. All of his latest live action films have been box office bombs.
Eddie used to be so funny, one of my favorites! He needs to go back to movies like Beverly Hills Cop & 48 Hours. He was a better actor when he was younger, sorry Eddie!

Actually I could totally see this working because Eddie is doing the voice. The movie probably won’t be great but at least it might be funny.
He was good doing the voice of Donkey in the Shrek movies. He has a voice that was made for animation. That didnt come out right but you know what I mean. lol I do remember Hong Kong Phooey, it was cute! IMO, cartoons were more appreciated when they only came on Saturday mornings. Excuse me, my age is showing! lol
Really? Hong Kong Phooey? Well, I guess it’s better than Jabberjaw, Speed Buggy or Captain Caveman…but wow, I just never would’ve predicted this as Eddie Murphy’s next career move.
He needs to work up some material and do another concert movie. He should get back to his “R” rated roots.

They should do an animated movie where he does the voice of a Gorilla. That would be priceless.

even as a kid i thought hong kong phooey sucked.it just wasn’t any good.THIS out of all the cartoons they choose to do?it’ll be as stupid as the movie versions of underdog and the smurfs.what’s next,turbo teen?
