Jason Statham's 'Blitz': A clip from the direct-to-DVD cop thriller -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Blitz

They don’t make movie tough guys like they used to. In the ’60s and ’70s, there was Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood. In the ’80s and ’90s, it was Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis. But nowadays, there aren’t a whole lot of bankable action stars willing to pick up a crowbar and beat the stuffing out of bad guys. Maybe that’s why we have a soft spot for Jason Statham movies. The chrome-domed Cockney badass is a throwback to the macho stars of the past. Whether he’s burning rubber behind the wheel in the Transporter movies, getting jacked-up on adrenalin in the loco Crank flicks, or teaming up with his pugnacious predecessors in The Expendables, Statham feels like a bona fide throwback to the good ol’ days.

Which is why I’m a little surprised that his latest film, the rogue cop thriller Blitz, is making its debut not on 2,000 screens but instead is going direct-to-DVD in the States on Aug. 23. The film, which opened in U.K. theaters back in May, is like a British version of Dirty Harry, with Statham as chain-smoking, hard-drinking, stubbly, South East London police sergeant. He’s big on breaking rules, flipping the bird to his superiors, and, of course, excessive force. But just as he’s burning out on the job, a serial cop killer starts murdering his pals on the force. And we all know what that means: It’s Statham time, sucka!

Check out this exclusive preview clip from Blitz below and the trailer and tell us what you think.

I agree, Chris. Jason Statham seems to be the go to guy for dependable action movies these days. He’s equally adept at driving, shooting, fighting and blowing things (and people) up. Even though this is debuting here on dvd, I’m looking forward to seeing this as well as Killer Elite!

I agree with this article. Statham mostly looks the part when he’s playing a tough guy. Nowadays, a lot of movies have oversensitive metro p#$$y boys who just have flashy abs but look like fish out of water when it comes time to deliver on the action scenes. I’m tired of that.

Well Jason has Killer Elite coming out soon and it looks GOOD! Deniro is in it along with Clive Owen and Adewale (Eko from LOST). I’m there!

Jason Statham has now joined the ranks of Straight to DVD kings such as Michael Madsen, Ron Perlman, Eric Roberts, Christian Slater, Val Kilmer, Ray Liotta, Ving Rhames, Steven Seagal, Jean Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Cuba Gooding Jr, Wesley Snipes, Danny Trejo, Armand Assante, Michael Biehn, Cary Elwes, etc.

I can’t believe you would lump Jason Statham in with those guys. Not nearly as washed up as the aforementioned actors. I can’t think of one movie I didn’t really enjoy with him in it. The Mechanic was horribly slept on.

    • Christie

It’s ONE movie that’s going straight to DVD and it’s basically an independent, low-budget BRITISH film. There’s no particular reason an American studio would have picked it up for big screen release but Lionsgate obviously thinks it can make money. Statham has both “Killer Elite” and “Safe”–both studio releases–coming out this fall.

It’s not his first one to go straight to DVD. Chaos with Ryan Phillipie was straight to DVD as well, and I can’t think of the title off the top of my head, but there was at least one other. I like Statham too, but his flicks are not only becoming increasingly derivative of each other (not to mention any other action movie), but they don’t have the look and feel of any thing that NEEDS to be seen (or shown) in a theater. They play best on DVD and Spike TV. Basically, he needs to get more selective in his material. Action films are fine, but stick with the fresh ones (say what you will about Crank, but no one ever saw anything like that before) or the ones that challenge him as an actor a bit (The Bank Job), lest we have to suffer through any more eye-rolling, been-there-done-that drivel like “War”. “Killer Elite” looks like more of the same. Another movie that if it didn’t have name stars in it, would be debuting on DVD. This has happened to almost every other action star. It seems to be the eventual career trajectory of an actor who is known only as an “action movie guy”, so its not surprising that Statham is easing there himself. It’s only a matter of time before more of his releases go straight to DVD than hit theaters.

Adewale was awesome in “Oz” as Adubeesi.

    Go Jason GO!!!

  • Paul

Statham… now HE would be a great Jack Reacher.

    • mrsT

You got that right!! I wonder if he can do an American accent?

      WHO CARES?? IT’S JASON STATHAM!

      • Lyndsey

He did an American accent in Chaos for sure (I still get tickled at his trash talk about the former Pac-10) & I’m pretty sure he has in others. There’s still a bit of British in there but nothing to complain about. Heck, I’d prefer he keep his accent in every role though…it only adds to the overall sexiness! ;-)
Statham’s pretty much my favorite current action star…though the picking are a might thin these days. My dad raised me on Clint Eastwood, Stallone, Arnold, etc so I appreciate that Statham reminds me of them. I tried to watch the Bourne movies but, as much as I love him as an actor, I just couldn’t buy him as this invincible, butt-kicking action hero! I want my action stars to look & sound like someone even the biggest guys would be afraid to cross!!!

  • joe

the only reason this is going straight to dvd is because its an all british cast. had this movie been filmed in the U.S. with some more american actors, i am sure it would have gotten a wide release here. reviews of this movie are great

    • Summer

Hmm…. That’s a pretty bad generalization Joe, following your logic we wouldn’t of see any of the Harry Potter films, The Kings Speech & so many other films.

  • Jackson

I saw this and it was very good. Very slick London thriller.
