Comic geeks have Comic-Con, gamers have E3, and now Disney fans have their own personal mecca: the D23 Expo. Launched in 2009, D23 took 2010 off but came roaring back last weekend (Aug. 19-21) at the Anaheim Convention Center. Billed as “the ultimate Disney fan event,” D23 gave attendees an exclusive sneak peek at the company’s upcoming movies (including The Avengers and John Carter) and theme-park attractions. Also featured was the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives, a museum that displayed costumes and props from such films and shows as Pirates of the Caribbean, Alice in Wonderland, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Lost. And perhaps most alluring of all for Disney nuts was the Collectors Forum — a gigantic marketplace of Disney-themed merchandise from pricey paintings to vintage figurines to life-sized animatronic robots. If you wanted a Yahtzee game in which the dice cup has been replaced by the skull of Jack Skellington, D23 had it.
To help make sense of it all, EW talked to Steven Clark, Disney’s head of D23. Click through to hear his thoughts on this year’s event and to see footage from the Expo floor:

Around 20 booths was a “gigantic marketplace”? You’ve never been to Comic-Con, have you? Or even Frank & Sons.
There were 52 booths. True, that’s small compared to Comic-Con, but I was still impressed by the overall size and variety of the collection.
Alice in wonderland? i went to this party once where the nnrtaece was the rabbit hole, and when you got inside there were different themed areas ,like the mad hatters tea party, the queens playing cards, and the forest-all the girls wore puffy dresses and bows, some people came as tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum,and others just wore bunny ears!the color theme was rainbow, and there was a lot of balloons and big fake clocks and teapots on the walls.they also passed out glow sticks and turned off all the lights,so it was like,ah Alice in wonderland rave-the dj was the mad hatter-it was real cool
I loved the Disney legends ceremony. I was thrilled that Paige O’Hara (voice of Belle), Jodi Benson (voice of Ariel & Barbie in the Toy Story” films), Lea Salonga (singing voice of Princess Jasmine and Mulan), and Linda Larkin (speaking voice of Jasmine) were all named Disney Legends. I was surprised that Anika Noni Rose (voice of Tiana from “The Princess & the Frog”) was named one. She’s wonderful, but the film only came out two years ago.
The expo was a wonderful experience but by Sunday it really felt like they were drawing the event out. It easily could have been 2 days and events in the arena like the “Shake It Up” event should have been scratched.
