It may not look like it, but The Artist is a brand-new film. The Cannes darling, which is headed to theaters Oct. 19, has the distinction of being a rare modern silent film — and the recipient of early Oscar buzz. The Artist, directed by Michael Hazanaviciu, follows two 1920s-1930s film stars coping with the medium’s transition into talking pictures.
