We’ve been waiting three long years, but, finally, we can look forward to the Julia Roberts vehicle Fireflies in the Garden to hit theaters this fall. The film — which co-stars Ryan Reynolds and first screened at the Berlin Film Festival in 2008 — will be self-released by its filmmakers Oct. 12 in Los Angeles and New York. (Though the film opened overseas in 2008, its release in the U.S. was halted after its former production company, Senator Entertainment, shut down.) Fireflies follows one family forced to cope with the consequences of a sudden tragedy. Roberts plays the matriarch of the family, while Reynolds plays a famous romance novelist intertwined with the story.
Those of you between the coasts could see Fireflies in your local theaters as well. Producers behind the film, written and directed by Dennis Lee, intend to expand following its limited release. “I am so pleased our film will finally get a theatrical release in the U.S.,” Lee said in a statement released to press. “Anyone familiar with our story knows the road to this moment has been paved with challenges. It’s not lost on me how much care and determination it took to bring Fireflies to light.”

FLOP
This won’t stop EW from putting Julia on the cover and gushing about her beautifulness and award-worthiness…..
It probably will get a gushy cover story only to get a mediocre-to-bad review either Owen or Lisa (possibly in the same issue — I think it’s especially hilarious when that happens)…
*review FROM Owen or Lisa
Quite a nice amount of disasters at the box office Ryan Reynolds is racking up this year.
Ryan Reynolds is becoming the male Katherine Heigl.
I’ve always wanted to see Julia Roberts do a movie with Tom Cruise. They are both incredible actors and it would be amazing to see them bounce off each other in a film.
Gee thanks. What studio do you work for?
I thought this movie already came out. Im almost a 100% positive I’ve seen this movie, and not at a film festival but in the comfort of my own home. So I’m confused…
Hard to believe a Julia Roberts movie would be in the can for so long.
I thought she was still very bankable.
But then again, Ryan Reynolds is really becoming box office poison.
GORRAMIT!
I though the headline said that Firefly will be flying into theaters
My dreams of Serenity sequel squashed again!
SOB!
Shiny. Well done.
Bad reporting. How about tell us ahem why-y-y-y it hasn’t been released since 2008? Give us a history or don’t bother posting an article.
I gathered this had something to do with it: “[I]ts release in the U.S. was halted after its former production company, Senator Entertainment, shut down.”
Umm….. reread the article. It tells you right there.
I’d completely forgotten about this movie. Evidently, so did the entertainment-industry press (you’d think they’d have been clamoring to report on a “new” Julia Roberts movie even despite the fact that she hasn’t had a commercial success in about 5 years).
Great article. I can¡¯t wait to hear more about your research tool. If it is as good as your other products, then you will have another winner. Your article pretty much summed up what I have been seeing too. Great to see some hard data.
Hi there, simply was alert to your weblog via Google, and found that it is truly informative. I am gonna be careful for brussels. I’ll be grateful if you continue this in future. A lot of other people might be benefited out of your writing. Cheers!
Wow Vicki, Titanic? That came out my freshman year of clgleoe…I don’t think I could go that long without escaping to the movies. The longest I think I’ve ever gone is a year or so and I hated not being able to go. (We’d moved to a rural area, I had a newborn…it just wasn’t convenient) My best friend is like you though, she never goes to movies.
