Box office preview: 'The Help' prepares for 'Don't Be Afraid of Our Colombiana Brother'

Like last weekend, it’s going to be another quiet session at the box office, especially with Hurricane Irene heading straight for most of the East Coast. Unlike last week, when Hollywood bombarded moviegoers with three new 3-D pictures (and one supposedly British Anne Hathaway), this weekend is thankfully all two-dimensional. The breakout hit The Help should remain in first, while three new releases battle for second place: the indie comedy Our Idiot Brother, the haunted-house thriller Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, and the revenge action film Colombiana. In what could be an incredibly close race, here’s how I think the top five will finish: READ FULL STORY »

'The Artist' trailer: Silence!

It may not look like it, but The Artist is a brand-new film. The Cannes darling, which is headed to theaters Oct. 19, has the distinction of being a rare modern silent film — and the recipient of early Oscar buzz. The Artist, directed by Michael Hazanaviciu, follows two 1920s-1930s film stars coping with the medium’s transition into talking pictures. And, if the trailer is any indication, it looks like silence may be golden. Teaser embedded below! READ FULL STORY »

Darren Criss not attached to 'Downers Grove' after all

Looks like Darren Criss will get to avoid some on-set awkwardness after all. Just four days after American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis tweeted that Darren Criss may be starring in an adaptation of Michael Hornburg’s Downers Grove that he’s writing, EW has learned that the Glee star is in fact not attached to the film.

It would have been a strange pairing — in April, Ellis took to his Twitter to spew insults about the Fox hit. READ FULL STORY »

'The Hunger Games': Watch one second of the film here, courtesy of MTV

Categories: The Hunger Games

On Tuesday, MTV officially announced the impending arrival of the world premiere exclusive teaser for next year’s The Hunger Games, which will air this weekend. Now, the network has followed up that announcement with a sneak peek of the sneak peek: A commercial for the trailer, which features various abstract shots of a flaming Mockingjay pin and (by my count) exactly 1.1 seconds of footage of star Jennifer Lawrence looking freaked out. Three conclusions I can draw from this footage: 1. There will be shaky handheld photography, but the overall grittiness quotient is still unclear. 2. Jennifer Lawrence has good camp hair. 3. Despite protestations to the contrary, I actually got pretty excited by this footage. Check it out below: READ FULL STORY »

'Weekend' trailer: Bittersweet gay romance between two Brits

Here’s a gay, British movie from a first-time director (Andrew Haigh) and two lead actors you’ve probably never heard of (Tom Cullen and Chris New), but don’t let that dissuade you. The story at the heart of Weekend — about a couple who hooks up at a bar for what they think will be a one-night stand — will strike closer to home than you’d probably like to admit. Still, another one-night stand movie? Don’t worry. It’s where Haigh takes the relationship between Cullen’s and New’s characters over a course of two drug- and drink-filled days that makes Weekend stand-out from the rest. After creating buzz at and winning prizes at SXSW and Los Angeles’s Outfest, Weekend opens in New York on Sept. 23, Los Angeles on Sept. 30, and then has a limited nationwide release starting Oct. 7. Watch the trailer (which features a few shots of the leads in their undies) here:  READ FULL STORY »

West Memphis Three doc 'Paradise Lost 3' will debut its new ending at New York Film Festival

Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky’s documentary about the recently freed West Memphis Three, Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory, will premiere a new ending at the New York Film Festival. The festival runs from Sept. 30 to Oct. 16. Berlinger and Sinofsky, who were in Arkansas with their cameras last week when the West Memphis Three — Jason Baldwin, Jessie Misskelley Jr., and Damien Echols — were released from prison after 18 years, have been busy editing their footage into the film. The new ending, however, will not be finished in time for the film’s world premiere at the Toronto film festival next month. READ FULL STORY »

Jonah Hill has joined the cast of Neighborhood Watch, Fox confirms. Joe Berlinger, the director of the award-winning 1996 documentary Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills along with Bruce Sinofsky, tells EW that Johnny Depp, Peter Jackson, and Eddie Vedder have not only spent the past several years advocating for the release of the West Memphis Three, but they have also privately donated part of their personal fortunes to help make it happen. “You had the best minds in the business working on this case thanks to Johnny Depp, Peter Jackson, and Eddie Vedder’s financial support,” says Berlinger, who puts the trio’s donations in the neighborhood of “many millions of dollars.”  READ FULL STORY »
