'Shame': Fox Searchlight picks up graphic drama starring Michael Fassbender

Fox Searchlight has picked up the U.S. distribution rights for Shame, the drama from director Steve McQueen that premiered to considerable acclaim earlier this week at the Venice and Telluride film festivals, and is currently playing at the Toronto Film Festival. The film reunites McQueen with actor Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), who starred in the director’s first movie, the 2008 drama Hunger.

In Shame, Fassbender plays Brandon, a thirtysomething New Yorker with a compulsive addiction to sex. Brandon’s life begins to unravel when his younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves into his apartment. The film, which could be headed for a NC-17 rating due to its graphic sex scenes, will open sometime before the year’s end, thereby pushing Fassbender into the Best Actor Oscar race.

I hope Fassbender gets some Oscar love, but the NC-17 but work against it.

Hopefully, the Director’s cut DVD will include ALL the scenes that will be banished to get the coveted R rating fro the twisted bizarre ratings board.

God knows that a clear shot of a bare penis or vagina would traumatize American viewers who can only handle dismemberments, disembowelments and torture scenes as choices on their entertainment buffet.

      • obviously an idiot

haha I totally agree the freaks at the rating board have it all f*cked up! sex is something that all of us experience while violence is something all of us hope not to experience it’s so stupid. I mean I don’t mind movies being more violent ehh except for the torture porn films haha those screenwriters must be some really f*cked up people. but anyways I hate how sex is seen as something that’s worse than watching violence. it’s hella strange if u ask me

Betweeen this and A Dangerous Method Fassbender should have a nomination in the bag. We’ll see what happens.

And then there was Jane Eyre earlier in the year. Not a certain thing at all, but still a possibility.

The nomination won’t happen. The film isn’t remotely the Academy’s sort of thing.

Interesting that so many people with a stick up their @$$ have no interest in viewing anything having anything to do with anything being stuck anywhere!!

Never say never. He just won Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for this performance.

  • Marion

I’m in love with him. He is making amazing performances.

  • puzzlrr

I find him so unattractive. I wonder what everyone sees in him. Now they are trying to force feed him down our throats like they do with every other Englishman. Why don’t they let US discover him, build up his following, then put him in every movie on the planet. Sheesh. They did the same thing with Daniel Craig and that hasn’t really worked out too well, (except for James Bond, no one wants to see him in anything else).

First of all Michael Fassbender is IRISH not English. Secondly I do not think he is being force fed unlike alot of so called talented actors. He has worked steadily in movies fo years, most of which by the way he has got acclaim for, and already has a loyal and substantial fan base however it was X-Men that really put him on the typical HW radar. Just because it is only now US has discovered him does not mean nobody else has ever heard of him or apprecaited his work.
I am laughing with your comparison with Daniel Craig as they are miles apart. Michael Fassbender is extremely talented wheres Daniel Craig not so much and cannot play a wide range of characters.
