Box office update: 'Contagion' consumes weak competition with $8 mil on Friday

In what’s shaping up to be possibly the slowest weekend of the year at the box office, the only bright spot was the new viral thriller Contagion, which topped the charts with an estimated $8 million on Friday. Warner Bros.’ PG-13 film, which was directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars a who’s who of Oscar winners and nominees, received mostly positive reviews and is on pace for a solid $22 million opening. But its success cannot distract from the box office’s overall dismal performance. The top 10 movies grossed an estimated $19.6 million on Friday — the lowest Friday figure so far this year.

The weekend’s three other new releases all struggled. Lionsgate’s Warrior, a PG-13 sports drama about two brothers (Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton) who face each other in a mixed martial arts tournament, mustered only $1.8 million on Friday. The $25 million movie earned strong reviews and some Oscar buzz for Hardy and supporting actor Nick Nolte. But in order to keep its award prospects alive, the film has to hold up well these upcoming weeks.

Razzies, rather than Oscars, may be in store for the Adam Sandler-produced Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star, which picked up some of the worst reviews of the year and opened in 12th place with $540,000 on Friday. The result puts the R-rated comedy, which stars Nick Swardson as an aspiring porn actor, on track for a weekend gross of just $1.5 million. That won’t be the lowest opening weekend for a movie playing in at least 1,500 locations — that honor goes to the infamous Delgo with its $512,000 debut. But Bucky Larson won’t be too far behind.

Estimates haven’t been reported yet for the low-budget R-rated horror film Creature, which opened yesterday in 1,507 theaters. But considering the hardly advertised picture is about a half-human, half-alligator monster in the bayous of Louisiana, we doubt its box-office numbers will display much, um, bite.

Among holdovers, The Help slipped 26 percent for $2.7 million on Friday, dropping to second place for the first time after spending 25 days at No. 1. The PG-13 drama should collect $9 million this weekend, pushing its cumulative gross to about $137 million. And the R-rated spy thriller The Debt fell 45 percent for $1.4 million, while the revenge action flick Colombiana dropped 41 percent for $1.2 million.

Check back here on Sunday for the complete box office report.

1. Contagion — $8.0 mil
2. The Help — $2.7 mil
3. Warrior — $1.8 mil
4. The Debt — $1.4 mil
5. Colombiana — $1.2 mil

It is unfortunate that Burke & Hare, Inside Out, Main Street and Tanner Hall are only getting a limited release and we won’t find out how they would have done commercially if released nationwide. The first three films, in particular, have interesting casts.
It would have been particularly interesting to see how smaller films for Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque, Colin Firth and Rooney Mara would do commercially.

    • Marten

Main Street has a 0% on RT and Burke & Hare have a 36%, so I doubt they’d be doing gangbusters.

    • Darrin

Listen, idiot – please stop posting this same comment under a different name every single week listing a bunch of movies that are barely getting released. Let me answer your question – if any of these movies had any wide commercial appeal, they would get a wide release. You want to know how they’d do if released wide? They’d bomb, because their backers don’t have the $ to mount a huge national marketing campaign. Please go away.

  • Garrison

I saw Warrior and it deserves to be No. 1 more than any other movie. It is a compelling story about what’s important in life – not just your dreams but who you take with you when your dreams come true and everyone in the audience was emotional with joy by the end of the film.
I hope ‘Warrior’ launches Kurt Angle’s movie career and he does more mainstream movies from now on such as ‘The Expendables 2′ and the next James Bond film.

    • Cain

Warrior is not what people think. It’s about the struggles of the American middle class and a dysfunctional family. And it happens to have some MMA.

      • PJ

I liked it when it was called The Fighter.

      • Cain

PJ – Have you seen it?

      • reality

ok I did see i, based on the chatter I heard on this and other message boards (drummed up by Lionsgate I suspect) and found it to be manipulative and derivative, it had some moments but is in no way the masterpiece these comments are making it out to be, it is “The Fighter” lite at best, and btw the title itself is not doing it any favors, ‘The Warriior” makes it sound like a cheesy direct to dvd MMA pic, maybe that is why some people are staying away!..Nolte and Hardy were good but this film will be forgotten come Oscar time!..if you want to see a good sports oriented film about the middle class check out “Win Win” a much better film from earlier this year!

      • reality

sorry it is called “Warrior” not “The Warrior” just as bad if not worse!

      • Larry in NoHo

PJ, that’s exactly what I thought when I saw the ads.

      • GUS

reality I feel out of touch at what you are saying! there is no way you could have seen Warrior and not have your life changed by it, maybe it has not hit you yet!..it is kinda like medicine takes a little while to kick in, but when it does..woosh you will be transformed by it’s powers. in fact I am changing my kids names to Tom and Hardy they are both girls but they will thank me later!

    • Garrison

yes I was paid to make the comment so what!

    • GUS

in 50 years Warrior is going to be thought of as Citizen Kane is now, a landmark in cinema history, scholars will be talking about it in film schools, it is destined to become legendary, truly a life changing expierience for any one who sees it, if they come up with a cure for cancer they should name it after this film, it is that important!

    • Red

      Whatever dude.

  • DRG

Last weekend fanboys were all over these board proclaiming that Warrior was going to be #1 this week. So much for fanboy hype.

    • Red

Those weren’t fanboys. Those were interns at Lionsgate trying to drum up buzz for another flop.

  • Woot

I have no idea why all these people keep spamming the boards about how amazing Warrior is and how it deserves to be number one. I see nothing wrong with a good thriller taking number one at the box office.

    • Cain

Contagion is on 3,700 screens (257 IMAX). It has name stars.

Warrior is on 2,100 screens. It has two up and comers.

      • GUS

Cain I am glad I am Able to meet somone who thinks like me Brother!

    • @Woot

Warrior is the latest fanboy darling, that’s why.

      • Cain

You’re really worked up about it aren’t you? haha. The box office of a film really matter that much to you? haha.

    • Woot

I’m aware Contagion is on more screens, it just seems a little bizarre that so many post seem to be about how amazing Warrior is (or that there is nothing else good) when Contagion has gotten almost identical reviews as Warrior. Is it really that big of a deal?

      • GI

because half of these comments are from bots on Lionsgate’s payroll!

      • GUS

2011 will be remembered as the year Warrior was released, so STFU Woot and all you non-believers, statues will be erected, holidays will be named in honor of this most important film!

      • B

LOL Gus! It’s just a movie.

      • GUS

b it is more then a movie..it has now become my way of life your comment made me so mad I just hit my Cat, Warrior is the the most Important film of all time!

      • GUS

B I will light a candle and pray to my picture of Tom Hardy for you!…hopefully one day you will see the light, and embrace the most important film ever made!

      • Liz Lemon

I wish I had seen Warrior…Contagion wasn’t terrible, but it was not worth my $9.

      • Woot

I personally thought Contagion was great. Absorbing story, great acting… just lacking a bit of character development, but the story just moved so well that I didn’t mind it too much. Definitely worth my $7 (sorry you had to pay $9 Liz Lemon… ) Also, GUS you are my new hero.

      • GUS

thank you Woot, but I am just a person, Warrior is the real hero!

    • kennedyDC

How is “Contagion” any different than 1995’s “Outbreak,” the Dustin Hoffman / Rene Russo movie?

      • Gi

about as different then “Warrior” is from last years “The Fighter” little tweaks here and there but basically the same movies

      • Liz Lemon

It’s basically the same, but not as dramatic.

    • LP

I would agree with you all if I didn’t see those reviews. The comments seem to come from plants, but if you look at the reviews they are absolutely glowing. I haven’t seen it yet, but after seeing Contagion, Warrior might be a better choice.

As always, Lionsgate marketing can pay me via paypal. Thank you.

      • C

not all the reviews have been positive this is a Quote from the New York Post..”A cheap exploitation picture wrapped in miles and miles of stale would-be Oscar scenes”

  • LOL

    America loves carp.

    • Anti-LOL Group Inc.

F-k off and die, bot! The rest of us are sick of your s–t.

      • LOL

        Carp isn’t edible, is it?

      • Anti-LOL got punk’d

        LOL! You can’t even read.

      • MJ

        I love you LOL

    • America

personally I love Salmon or Tuna over Carp!

    • Jason

Carp is pretty good, but I think Tuna is better.

    • GI

I like a nice Blackened Catfish, Carp tastes kinda Weird!

    • Cameron J

LMMFAO. And yes, 2 Ms. My day was completely made when I saw that you can’t even lamely troll nonsense no one cares about right anymore. Seeing that’s all you seem to be good at, you may want to leave your basement hideaway and confront the big scary world outside.

      • Pinku

before, there should be a $100.00 cuhsrarge tacked on to your cell phone bill if you use your cell phone to call 9-1-1. If, after review by the EMS (or fire or police) crew that had to respond, they think your call was legit, you get that credited back. If not, you pay. Another one of my better ideas that will never be implemented.

    • C

well say what you want about Warrior but it has to be better then Fast Five!

    • little lol

hey that’s not nice, even bots have feelings!……JUST JOKING ..F U HARD LOL!

    • LOL

OH NO! I meant CRAP CRAP!

      • GUS

I hope you were not talking about Warrior when you made that statement, because it is the most important film of your lifetime, it will literally change your life, it is more then a film it is a religion!

      • LOL

GUS loves crap. I might have fallen for that Warrior crap if I hadn’t seen the best movie of the year already, a film that surely changed my life. A film called Fast Five.

      • GUS

LOL you are delusional what is a Fast Five?..I just got back from watching the late showing of the most important film of the year Warrior, and read your hurtful comment, is there something wrong with you? go see Warrior it will cure whatever ails you, I have seen it 6 times in two days, and plan on seeing the 11:15 showing tomorrow morning, you need to let it wash over, you will feel like a new person, it is much more then a movie it is a movement!

      • LOL

…………….ok then. BTW America loves crap.

  • William Forrester

I watched Warrior today and it’s one of the year’s best films. It moved me and many others in the theatre to tears. The film was so deeply emotional, so heavy with sorrow at times and uplifting at the conclusion.
I think Tom Hardy will surely get a nomination for an Academy Award. I think he’ll get a Oscar nomination at least. He is incredible and he is amazing. And I think he will get it. It’s an incredible performance, just wonderful.

    • George

An Oscar and Academy Award are the same thing. Redundant much?

      • William Forrester

        Retarded much?

      • poop

Wait, who are YOU calling retarded?
Let me quote you: I think Tom Hardy will surely get a nomination for an Academy Award. I think he’ll get a Oscar nomination at least.
        Retarded much? Answer: YES.

      • William Forrester

with a name like “Poop” who can take you seriously. sounds like CRAP to me!..LOL

      • William Forrester

Lionsgate did not explain to me that there was no difference between a Oscar and a Academy Award..sorry!

      • poop

That first reply worried me you were still retarded, but your second reply fully explains your mistake. I’m sorry if I offended you.

      • William Forrester

        gotta make the cheddar..lol

      • Darrin

Do you work for Lionsgate or something, that they should be personally providing you information? And if so, shouldn’t you already know that an Oscar IS an Academy Award? That’s pretty basic knowledge.

      • William Forrester

No I don’t work for Lionsgate, I am independant, just got mixed, get off my Rear man!

      • William Forrester

just because I like to play with my own Fecal Matter does not make me retarded, my daddy/husband says I am just special!

      • Veena

I am a medic in the guard and work at madigan and see this first hand. I setomimes work with these ghys directly. Dont have much money to give but still want to help more. I volunteered at the WTB christmas party last year and enjoyed it.

    • reality

it has as much as chance as Bucky Larson does at even being nominated forany Acaademy Awards, Nolte may have an outside chance for suporting but even that is doubtful ..and no amount of spamimng these message boards under different names is gonna make it happen…jeez this story was supposed to be about Contagion, and you have made it into one big commercial for Warrior!

    • LOL

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

      • GUS

go see Warrior you will feel better, it is known to cure the common cold!

  • HollyB48

Warrior is the best movie I have seen in years! Oscars should be won. I saw the advanced screening. Never seen an audience so captivated and get so emotional. Saw lots of guys trying to hide tears. Taking my parents to go see it on Saturday. So after seeing it twice I’m actually kind of sad I will have to wait so long to own the movie for myself.

    • America

wow how much is Lionsgate paying you to say that!

      • STFU

You all complain about the quality of the movies that are in theaters but at the same time you make it a point to not only avoid Warrior but also make fun of anyone who actually enjoyed it. Because it got bad reviews? Nope. Because it only made 1.8 million yesterday? Yep. So go and flock to the same movie everyone else is going to. Don’t judge for yourself. Let the boxoffice stats do it for you. This is the reason crap movies make so much money. You are all part of the problem. Think for yourselves or stop bit*hing every week.

      • reality

I did see it and it was just alright, not as good as “The Fighter”, not as good as “Win Win” a movie no one saw!… it has nothing to with the boxoffice, but the amount of hype given to the film on this message board is ridiculous, the film is hardly the best film of the year, enjoyable, manipulative, and ultimatley forgettable!

      • reality

plus the majority of these comments about Warrior (actually more like Testimonials) keep mentioning it’s Oscar chances, like that really makes a difference on a films quality, the list of classic films nomited for very little or no oscars would include classics like Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey , Vertigo, Touch Of Evil, Psycho, Scarface, and The Breakfast Club, and yet unwatchable crap like Chariots of Fire wins Best Picture, but these testimonials keep using the prospect of nominations as a selling point, like saying it over and over again will make it happen, get real the film is not that amazing!…not bad but not amazing!

      • America

actually I think it has been a pretty decent year with a number of good films being released such as “Super 8″, “Limitless”, “Horrible Bosses”, “Source Code”, “Midnight In Paris”, “Beginners”, and “The Adjustment Bureau” all being top notch I even enjoyed “Paul”, “Thor” and “Captain America” ..so who is bit*hing every week?….

      • GUS

F U America!…Warrior is a 1000000000 times better then any film you mentioned, it can literally cure cancer, the most important filmof all time!

    • GUS

I agree HollyB48, Warrior is probably the most important film ever made, forget the oscar, it should win the Nobel Peace Prize, I think they should pull every other film out of theaters and just show Warrior, it is that important that every man, woman, and child see it, hell even bring your pets!..this film could change your life!

      • Anonymous

Usually I hate trolls, but I find you hilarious. Much better than LOL.

  • Anon

WARRIOR IS AMAZING! Seriously I knew it was going to be good but walking into the theater I didn’t know it was going to be that good. The movie was, simply put, perfect. I wouldn’t have changed one thing about it. I still have goosebumps when I think about it! I thought it was way better than The Fighter and hands down one of the best movies of 2011. I will definitely be seeing it again.

    • LOL

      Warrior is crap.

      • GUS

I was lost too LOL.. until I was found because of Warrior, we will pray for you!

      • C

this is the first time I have actually agreed with LOL, I am scared!

  • mcouf33

I disagree that Warrior needs to do well at the box office in order to keep Oscar hopes alive. Look at Shawshank, that movie tanked at box office- $28,341,469 for entire run and they had to re release it after the buzz. Warrior is a great movie

    • George

However, it won zero of the seven Oscars it was nominated for.

    • reality

sorry I saw it, it is not on the level of “Shawshank Redemption” or “The Hurt Locker” a film that made no money but did go on to win a Best Picture Oscar!

  • Happy Madison accountant

Those numbers on Bucky Larson are a mistake. It actually had a $54 million dollar Friday and will make an impressive $120 million this weekend.

Children all over America will be dressed as their hero Bucky this Halloween and the movie will, no doubt, win about 30 Oscars.

So get on Fandango, America. All aboard the Bucky Larson train to awesome-town!

    • LOL

      America loves crap.

      • GUS

you keep speaking about Crap LOL, I am sorry are you constipated?..go see Warrior it will help you with your Bowels, garaunteed!

  • it

i am gonna watch warrior next week in las vegas and also drive.

  • Cameron J

HEY! No one is allowed to say they liked Warrior around here. Even if they do! Apparently people here treat it at the same level as Twilight and Transformers- mentioning it will get you instant crucifixion!

    • America

@Cameron J the problem a lot of these comments are written like commercials for the film, and seem kinda hinky like spam, talking about oscars and such from even 3 weeks back, trying to create buzz, I saw the film and thought it was enjoyable same can be said for Contagion, it’s just that the Hyperbole has gotten out of hand and is creating a backlash!

      • GUS

Shut Up America you don’t know what’s good for you we do!…go see Warrior again!

  • CaptMTS

Warrior is an outstanding film! I’m not a MMA fan, but I loved the movie. The fighting was well done and complemented the story of the brothers and their family. The film was highlighted by great acting and a great story/drama. The actors were amazing from the lead actors (Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton) to the supporting actors (Nick Nolte, Jennifer Morrison). Tom Hardy was excellent as the favored prodigal son returning home, and Joel Edgerton did a phenomenal job as the underdog son fighting for his family. The film had a wonderful pace and kept me riveted throughout the movie. Warrior should receive multiple awards from acting to directing to best picture!

  • Andy

There is also the story of Kevin Hart: Laugh At My Pain. It opened in 10th on very few screens and could actually out-gross Bucky Larson. The theatre I went to had 4 sold out showtimes last night.

  • Brett Ming

shawshank didnt win but had fierce competition, also freeman was robbed of a win that year!! he got shawshanked!!!!
