Hugh Jackman: I punched the wrestler -- but I did not break his jaw -- EXCLUSIVE

Who doubts that whole story about Hugh Jackman breaking that WWE wrestler’s jaw the other night?

Hugh Jackman does.

The Real Steel actor tells EW the backstory of his Monday night appearance on WWE Raw, where he appeared to promote his Oct. 7 robot boxing picture. Jackman hung around in the corner of Zack Ryder during his bout with rival Dolph Ziggler. Near the end of the fight, Jackman — who had been taunted by Ziggler in the run-up to the fight — distracted him with a punch to the face. (See the big moment in the photo above.)

Not really good sportsmanship, but it helped Ryder get the advantage and win the match. “Ladies and gentlemen, that was a real ‘steal’ for Zack Ryder,” the announce intoned, simultaneously announcing his campaign for Punmaster of the Universe.

The thing is, there’s a rumor going around that — brace yourself — wrestling is kind of … staged

I know, I know — sounds crazy. But when Ziggler took to Twitter the day after the fight and claimed the X-Men star had left his jaw with a hairline fracture, well … that sounded crazy too.

Here’s what Jackman has to say about it:

“It was scripted that I would go for that punch,” Jackman tells EW. “But just before we went on, Dolph was yelling at me, ‘You hit me man! Just f—ing hit me!’ During rehearsal I said, ‘I’d like to do it, but I’ve spent 20 years pulling punches, trying not to hit. Trying to make it look real, but not really hit.’ He said, ‘There’s no way. There’s cameras everywhere, there’s crowd everywhere, there’s no way we can “whiff it,”‘ as they call it.”

So …?

“So I hit him,” Jackman shrugs. “He said, ‘Hit me as hard as you can.’ So I hit him pretty hard. And you can see it in my eyes. I watched [the clip] again, and you can see me going ‘Uh oh …’ a little. I’m acting like, ‘Yeah!‘ but I’m really like, ‘S—, I kinda really clocked him in the jaw.’”

“The next day I read he really broke his jaw and I wasn’t surprised — but I don’t think he did,” Jackman continues, rolling his eyes. “He’s prone to exaggeration – which is why I hit him! Nah, just kidding!”

Jackman said he has been a wrestling fan since he was a kid. “What they do in the ring is real,” he says.

Hugh …

He puts his hands up. “I saw some faking that night, I’ll be deadly honest,” he says. “It’s scripted entertainment. But in that ring, and when you see them backstage getting warmed up, they get fired up. ‘You better f—ing hit me!’ They’re hitting each other backstage.”

All right, if there’s anything Mickey Rourke has taught us, it’s that wrestlers do endure a lot of physical punishment even if the fights aren’t exactly unchoreographed. But this broken jaw thing? Nah, Jackman’s not buying it. (Anyway, Ziggler was tweeting today about eating peanut butter waffles with WWE divas The Bella Twins, and I’m guessing they weren’t feeding them to him through a tube.)

Still Ziggler, I can’t help but think: Are you going to let a movie star question your integrity like that?

I’m glad to see an increasing number of celebrities making appearances in the WWE.

    • Captain

I’m not, it means the WWE is desperate for ratings. Glad I stopped watching years ago.

      • Phil

Not really. They’ve been having celebs on promoting things for years. Mr. T did a bit way back when they were promoting Rocky 3 (Hulk Hogan appeared in the movie too which was the tie in). It’s not new and it don’t spell desperate.

      • Baked Waker

Actually, Hogan was let go from the then WWF because of him stepping out of the wrestling world. Rocky 3 was by no means a cross-promotion and the WWF thought it would ridicule and marginalize wrestling. Of course, the opposite happened and Hogan went back into the WWF and wrestling took a leap forward.

    • will

you would cause you still live at or should i say LOL?

  • CG

Maybe they can get some other big stars who are wrestling fans like Joe Manganiello or Jason Momoa

    • Casey

Jason Momoa would be awesome to see in the “squared circle”. Have him team up with the Usos. That’d be cool.

  • Eaton Beavers

I hope they get more movie stars in the future. The obvious choice would be The Rock because his dad wrestled. He would be cool to see in wrestling.

    • Don’t like stupid

      Idiot

      • Dan

        Its called sarcasm “idiot”

    • HM

You’re joking, right? Because his *dad* wrestled? Nothing to do with his own early career?

  • Dr. Cox

ugh…one more reason to hate Hugh Jackman

    • whatevs

      What are the other ones?

      • dee123

Well if Dr. Cox is a guy Hugh is probably better than him in every single way so, he’s jealous.

      • Jose

Do you not get the reference?

    • Liz

HA! Best comment so far. Thanks for referencing one of the best TV comedies EVER!!! Oh, and to whatevs and dee123, watch Scrubs. There was a running gag that there was nothing Dr. Cox hated more than Hugh Jackman.

I don’t like nonwrestlers such as actors and celebrities getting in the ring with those WWE wrestlers. Those wrestlers are very tough and you’ve got to log some hours in the gym to get even with them! What if Dolph Ziggler attaked Hugh Jackman after that punch? There would have been some hot water right there!

  • Liam Owen

I hate the attitude that if it happens in a wrestling ring it can’t possibly be painful or physically damaging. There are literally people today who say that Owen Hart didn’t really die! If thats a storyline its going to be one hell of a return. As for Dolph Ziggler’s jaw, the minute I saw the punch I thought, that must have done some damage. Even Mike Tyson and Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t fully crack wreslters in the face. Then again at least he didn’t have the claws out. could’ve got messy. ;)

  • Billy Flynn

Sounds to me like they BOTH reached for the gun!

    • Roxie Hart

Oh, yes! Oh, yes! Oh, yes! Oh, yes! Oh, yes! They both reached for! The gun! The gun! The gun! They both reached for the gun! :D

  • Zeke

Brace yourself folks…The Muppets will be hosting this show on halloween night. Something actually worth watching, but really, the guest-hostying thing is geting really old and WWE needs to focus more on developing their talents than bringing in a guest host to shill for their products on cable TV.

    • Cris

Seriously? Now THAT would get me to tune in. Can’t wait to see Miss Piggy take on the champ.

  • Jeremy

At least Hugh had his Adamatium Claws retracted!

  • rick

I really like Hugh as an actor, though he hasnt had alot of really juicy roles to sink his teeth into, and sad to say, real steel looks pretty lame unless you’re a 14 year old kid. I really can’t believe that a star of his stauture would guest-host on WWE monday night RAW, I mean come on, this guy was probably the greatest host ever in the history of the acadamy awards, just watch the amazing opening sequence on youtube. Seriously his agent needs to be fired.

  • Harry

Hugh is my favorite closet case.

  • Matt W

It’s funny that every wrestling site is saying Diggler didn’t break anything. All a work.

  • javi

i don’t know about you people but this celebrity host for wwe raw makes me change the channel i miss the old days of wrestling when there where more companies like wcw, ecw, nwa(tna) now you have to watch those companies on the internet or cable like ring of honor or czw now the wwe its all about hollywood style presentations.

  • MysterWright

Ok, the last thing you want to do is say wrestling and their f word in the same sentence. Its not so much because that guy might come after you but that anywhere you go now any of them anywhere might ask if you believe that and start in. That’s like saying an Aussie is British. You just don’t go there. Wrestling is their freedom of expression. Their art. Its not anymore fake than a portrait, ballet or movie are. It just doesn’t have the same caliber of respect because Vince McMahon is what it’d be like if Louis B. Mayer had bought all the movie studios, or one of Edison’s buddies in JP Morgan’s pocket, when they first started making films. There’s no room for growth where wrestling can blossom into different exotic wildflowers. Its all been sterilized by the damn conservatives. So you can see why there’s a bit of underlying tension both in the ring and out. Something has got to give. These guys don’t even have a union but some work all but three days the whole year. So if you hit one of them and it takes away from their being able to work? Man, that’s just cold blooded. Ziggles is probably stressing about what is he supposed to do if he can’t work. Just take it easy on the wrestlers and they won’t hassle nobody. Regardless if they’re “American.”

Don’t mess with Wolverine! It’s lucky that his claws didn’t come out.
