Release dates moved up for 'Tintin,' 'War Horse,' and 'Mission: Impossible' 4

Christmas seems to be coming earlier every year, right?

It’s just a matter of a few days, but Steven Spielberg’s two holiday movies are moving up their release dates.

The Adventures of Tintin, based on the internationally beloved comics about a boy adventurer and his trusty dog Snowy, moves up two days to Dec. 21, while War Horse shifts from Dec. 28 to Christmas day. “After seeing the film, it became clear to us that War Horse is something audiences should be able to see when they’re together with their families on Christmas Day,” says DreamWorks spokesman Chip Sullivan. “They have the time to see multiple movies during the holidays, and we want to be one of their choices when they are most available.”

The move gives both films a jump on the crowded holiday moviegoing frame, which includes The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the 9/11 drama Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and the Matt Damon family drama We Bought a Zoo. Paramount Pictures, which is distributing Tintin, also announced that Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol — which previously occupied only the Dec. 21 date — would be released five days earlier on IMAX screens, at about 300 locations. Mission: Impossible director Brad Bird (The Incredibles) told the Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex blog: “I wanted the first people that see the film to see it big with a sharp image and great sound systems, so when they went out and talked about the movie they saw, we would know that they had seen it at its best.”

DreamWorks has had good luck getting the jump on their own release dates. This summer, the studio announced it would bump The Help from Friday, Aug. 12, to Wednesday, Aug. 10, allowing word of mouth to build in advance of the weekend, helping turn the 1960s race drama into a sleeper hit. Paramount did a similar adjustment for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, giving it a few extra days to capitalize on the Fourth of July weekend.

I agree. It’s going to be tough to choose what to see. Definitely want to see War Horse, probably The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo at some point, and I just can’t resist the cast of Mission Impossible IV. We Bought a Zoo could be great too (fingers crossed for a Cameron Crowe comeback.)

Interesting. That’s good news about Tintin I think. The sooner the better! But I think it’s risky when movies start Christmas Day. Do families really go out that night? I thought most people would be in eating turkey dinner and then sprawled about on the couch, exhausted and full, lol.

I can testify that having worked one Christmas Day (2009 to be exact), it was extremely busy. A lot of people go to movies on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day — and given that season had several huge movies, even ones like “It’s Complicated” had full showings.

    • Geek

Yepp. Christmas Day is the huge day. Christmas Eve is desolate in comparison. Everyone’s home with family or out getting last-minute gifts. I remember seeing Sherlock Holmes on Christmas Day. Jam-packed.

    • Jared

Not everybody celebrates Christmas. A lot of the Jewish families I know always go to the movies on Christmas because they don’t have to deal with all of the Christians.

      • Brian Wallace

Wow. It’s really surprising SPIELBERG didn’t think of that.

        Brian

      • Sean

yes, “dealing with all the christians” must be awful.

      • biji

yeah, cos who wants to “deal” with all those nasty, horrible christians? pretty rotten thing to say dude, unless it was in jest or what have you.

    • LM

It is a tradition for my family. We usually are dying to get out of the house after all of the relatives leave lol. Last year we saw True Grit in a packed theater.

      • AT

Same here. We usually go out on Christmas evening to see a movie if there’s anything we want to check out. We haven’t the last two years because we have a little boy and since all my family goes out too, no one could watch him.

    • Carrie

My family goes to the movies every Christmas; it’s a tradition. I was actually a little disappointed that “War Horse” wouldn’t be playing yet that day; now I know what we’ll be seeing! :)

  • Fowler

Last year at the Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol press conference in Dubai, Tom Cruise was quoted as saying:
“One of the things I always wanted for the franchise was for it not to have a number afterwards. I’ve never done sequels to films and I never thought of these films as sequels. Paramount has done a great job in coming up with a title, so it’s not going to be MI2, 3, 4: It’s going to be Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.”

I think what he meant was that all of the Mission: Impossible movies are set in their own alternate reality/universe and are not sequels or connected to each other. That explains why there is no continuity between the movies and why they keep using mostly new casts. It would have been good if they had emphasised this from the second film onwards and given each film a subtitle instead of a number.

    • PJ

Thank you for that useless information.

      • Ryan

You’re wrong Fowler. There is continuity. They go in order. In #1, he gets Ving Rhames off the disavowed list. In #2, Rhames is working for IMF again because of it. In #3, Cruise had retired, but when he’s about to pull off a big heist in China, Rhames said ‘Getting in Langley was easy compared to this’, referencing the famous break in from the first film.

So why they made not be completely connected like a Lord of the Rings film, there are no more in a separate universe each than the Indiana Jones movies.

  • Kasia

Superwoman Paula Patton is so voluptuous and shapely in ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ after giving birth to her first child with her toyboy husband Robin Thicke merely five months before filming began.
In the movie, she flaunts her amazing post-pregnancy figure that boasts an ample cleavage, fuller legs and a fuller backside.
Her incredible physique and sexy new curves probably added to her performance in delicious and wonderful ways.

    • Joe

Kasia, its a crappy Tom Cruse action movie. Go take a cold shower.

  • poop

I feel like War Horse moved up, then Tintin moved so there wouldn’t be two Spielberg releases on the same weekend.

  • Jeff

I don’t want to see any of those, at least not in a theater.

  • scorpio9094

Tin Tin is the only movie I’m looking forward to. I grew up watching the original animated series in the 60′s.

    • waya

TinTin has that weird animation like Polar Express and it give me the creeps. Its not real, but it isn’t animation either. I don’t think I can sit through a couple hours watching that with 3-d glasses.

      • Maya

I had a hard time sitting through your post.

A favorite Christmas tradition in our house is to top off the day with a (hopefully) good movie. The theaters are always packed.

    • Asha

We always go on Christmas Eve, the theatres are always empty so it’s just our family at whatever movie we pick. It’s one of my favorite Christmas traditions.

  • Susan

Our family tradition is to see one movie Christmas Eve and two movies on Christmas Day.

This is getting a bit more jiesbctuve, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of neighbors will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune Social is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Just saw the play of War Hose on Broadway…It is a very touching story. Looking forward to seeing the flick also.

  • saidgb2

    what to see this christmas
is it one of my childhood favorites
another sequel from a great franchise with another big TOM CRUISE name in the top of it
or a film from steve who might become a sleeper hit as the help was last aug.

  • jets

I thought “The Help” was Disney?

    • Jose

      Distrubuted via Dreamworks.

  • Sean

I’m actually looking forward to War Horse. Haven’t seen a Spielberg movie in a while that wasn’t sci-fi (AI, Minority Report, War of the Worlds) or a crappy sequel (indy 4). So this should be interesting.
