'The Avengers' dis-assembled! EXCLUSIVE cast portraits revealed

The whole fun of The Avengers is seeing these characters joined together as one fighting force, but for now Marvel Studios has unveiled solo portraits of the six superheroes.

Read more about the May 4, 2012, movie in this week’s issue of EW, on stands tomorrow. But in the meantime, here’s a little online exclusive with the actors discussing their high-powered alter-egos and working with writer-director Joss Whedon (the geek demi-god who created Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly.)

BLACK WIDOW: “The other day we were doing this big reveal shot of all the Avengers. Thor has got his hammer, Cap’s got his shield, Hawkeye has his bow and arrow, and Hulk is huge. Then it pans over to me and I’ve got guns. Iron Man’s like, hovering above all of us, ready to go,” says Scarlett Johansson. “I was like, ‘Joss… um… do I look okay holding these guns?'” Whedon’s response reassured her: “She’s a total badass. She’s a killing machine.”

IRON MAN: What were Robert Downey Jr.’s first meetings like with Whedon when the script was being developed? “Well, I said, ‘I need to be in the opening sequence. I don’t know what you’re thinking, but Tony needs to drive this thing.’ He was like, ‘Okay, let’s try that.’ We tried it and it didn’t work, because this is a different sort of thing, the story and the idea and the theme is the theme, and everybody is just an arm of the octopus. But what was I like?” He laughs. “As usual, just f—ing aggressive and hurtful; whatever. The usual.”

Wohoo!! Scarlett Johansson looks like a strong, empowered and sexy Black Widow. Hahah.. freakin’ fantastic, can’t wait! Man! I feel like a woman!

    • tang2

Now if only Marvel Studios could get the rights for Spider-man away from Sony! Then maybe we would FINALLY see the first PERFECT Spider-man film!!

      • Josh

wow, i thought that that was a real comment at first. pretty sneaky, tang2.

      • Adwina Lambert

ScarJo is soooo over-rated and over-exposed!! this charactrer should have been replaced by the Scarlet Witch and her hot brother and alien BF!! tee-hee

      • tang2

It seems that Hawkeye and Black Widow were meant to be substitutes for Ant-Man and Wasp all along.BTW,I wanna share a good news to you.My best friend ,she just has announced her wedding with a millionaire man who is a businessman!they met via richfriends.cc ..it is the largest and best club for rich people and their admirers to chat online. …You do not have to be rich or famous. ,but you can meet one , It’s worthy a try,Maybe you wanna check it out or tell your friends!

    • Jameson

You mean, it’s freakin’ fantastic for a supposedly “empowered” to look like every nerd’s fantasy girlfriend. I don’t get it.

      • janetfbickford@msn.com

She’s holding guns. That makes her empowered. LOL, nevermind how they’ll cut her scenes down and give her very little dialog. Yeah, that’s strong and empowered. Hell, Megan Fox had more of a role than Scarjo did in Iron Man 2.

Apparently just for being a girl in a superhero movie dominated by males makes a female character empowered. LOL she’s the least powerful in the group!

      • Meh

I absolutely agree. I love Black Widow, but for the male heroes, the producers of this film chose an unstoppable gamma-powered force of nature, a super-smart enginner/millionaire with a super-powerful armor, a god, and a super-fast, super strong, super-noble soldier. For the female hero, they chose…a decent fighter? Seriously? Why not Ms. Marvel? Wasp? Scarlet Witch? Monica Rambeau/Photon? Moondragon? Firebird? Silverclaw? Unless she ends up saving the day, thus exemplifying the whole David-and-Goliath/the least-you-expected-beat-the-big-bad scenario (and you know they won’t let the girl have a better showing than their precious Cap, or Iron Man), she will be useless against Loki, another god. What’s she gonna do, karate-chop him into submission? Spy him to death? The producers should have chosen a more powerful female avenger, from which there are plenty to choose.

      • shaun mendelkow

Remember this is directed by Joss Whedon. He is all about empowerment of women. Remember Buffy the 15 year old girl slaying all the baddies in town? Have faith in Joss, he knows how to make women characters hold their own against seemingly more powerfull characters.

      • It’s be all like this…

Loki will be all out of control with the cosmic cube thing and it will create some vortexy thing, and Loki will be all like “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” and then Nick Fury will be like: “PUSH THE BUTTON!” and Thor will be all: “BUT HE’S MY BROTHER” and and Nick and Tony Stark will be all: “BUT YOU HAVE TO DO IT, IT’S FOR THE BEST!” and Loki will wail again: “BROTHER, DON’T DO THIS, BECAUSE WE’RE…. BROTHERS….. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” and then Thor will turn his head away and say “I’M SORRY” and hesitate and then Black Widow will slam the button down with her hand and it will be done.

      • Steve Parkes

“You mean, it’s freakin’ fantastic for a supposedly “empowered” to look like every nerd’s fantasy girlfriend. I don’t get it.”

Yeah, because if a woman looks attractive in a film, she can’t possibly be empowered.

    • jimmy buffett sucks

  • Demond

This movie will be awesome.May 4th can’t come soon enough.

  • Caleigh

Okay the actual blurb from Mark Ruffalo is cool, but that’s *still* a terrible picture.

    • UGH

      He looks like a vampire!
Banner is supposed to be a bit of a nebbish.

      • Meg

Oh, please. Anyone in their right mind would see that this is Mark Ruffalo auditioning Bruce Banner/Hulk for Zoolander 2.

      • Daron

Exactly, my thought, Meg. But I think they just relieved a huge plot point: Banner is able to suppress the Hulk rage through Blue Steel (or is it Magnum?)

      • Alyssa

Haha I thought that too. Is that some sort of failed model thing Ruffalo has going?

    • Laura

It looks like he’s got his “duckface” going on!

      • Jiminy

        Total duckface. Absolutely douchtacular.

  • Glenn Stiller

It seems that Hawkeye and Black Widow were meant to be substitutes for Ant-Man and Wasp all along.

    • Demond

I hate that Ant-Man/Giant-Man and Wasp are not involved in this movie. They are founding members in the regular universe and the Ultimate universe.Hank and Janet Pym’s abilities would be awesome on screen.I would love to see Giant-Man fight Hulk on the big screen.

      • Neil

I agree, it sucks that Jan and Hank aren’t in the movie. They’d better be in the sequel if there is one.

      • Satan

God, save the world from nitpicky comic book nerds who can’t see that movies aren’t comic books.

      • Iggy

I like Antman& Wasp to,but pixie superheroes just dont work on the bigscreen.

      • DOBI

    • UGH

I think they’re going the low-budget route with having SHIELD characters instead of 2 more superpowered ones so there’s less CGI to worry about.

      • sean

        You’re calling $220+ million low budget? Get a grip…

      • Bill

More of a time budget thing. Takes less time to use chars the audience has already met than to do back stories for 2 new chars though, “This is a talented inventor scientist and his model girlfriend. He made them some really cool suits and they’re both affected by his size altering Pym particles.” really shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.

  • Carla Germanotta

Scarlett Johansson has an amazing healthy model figure that boasts an ample cleavage, fuller legs and a fuller backside. I just love her curves. She’s so shapely. She’s a great example to women around the country.
I would have liked to see Anne Hathaway have a fuller figure in The Dark Knight Rises like Scarlett Johansson does in this movie.

    • sunsetsnow81

      I agree!

    • Dana

its not really Anne Hathaway’s fault that she’s skinny

    • Co

She doesn’t have a model figure. Have you seen models working today?!

    • DaDude

Agreed, give me a nice thick broad any day of the week, over the sknny, sick looking model types. I like my woman to look like woman and not a 13 yr old boy. I’ll throw you one Carla!

    • Michael

Oh God, enough with this crap. Some men like skinnt women, some like busty women, some like fatsos, etc etc. There’s no need to bring it up every time a chick isn’t skinny.

    • Thank you, Carla…

      you may sit.

Robert Downey Jr. in August 2008 – “”My whole thing is that that I saw ‘The Dark Knight’. I feel like I’m dumb because I feel like I don’t get how many things that are so smart. It’s like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing and I’m like, ‘That’s not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.’ I loved ‘The Prestige’ but didn’t understand ‘The Dark Knight’. Didn’t get it, still can’t tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I’m like, ‘I get it. This is so high brow and so f–king smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.’ You know what? F-ck DC comics. That’s all I have to say and that’s where I’m really coming from.”
Robert Downey Jr. in August 2010 – ““Has everybody seen Inception? I think that was probably just about the most ambitious movie I’ve ever seen. Marvel Studios is going to take all of their top super heroes and they’re going to put them all together in The Avengers, that’s the most ambitious movie.”
When you do that with movies like Robert Downey Jr. said about The Dark Knight and Inception, and when you do things like that about a man like Christopher Nolan – I’ve kept really quiet, but I’ll tell you something, he went down in my estimation when he said that – we have not resorted to that. But I’ll tell you – we’re still fighting for box office supremacy, and The Avengers has to compete with The Dark Knight Rises next year and get something, and I tell you honestly, I will love it if The Dark Knight Rises outgrosses The Avengers, I will love it if we beat them, love it!

    • JohnT

“we beat them” working for DC comics or Nolan are ya? Otherwise, who are these “we” you are talking about?

    • Ian

Unless you’re actually working on the movie, then this may be the saddest post I’ve seen recently.

      • King Kev

Tucker, you’re a man after my own heart. Well said son.

    • Jose

Well that was an incredibly stupid post.

    • Therealeverton

Dark Knight Rises is coming off a Billion Dollar movie. It is Expected to beat The Avengers and, unless The Avengers makes over $1b, will be considered a disappointment if it doesn’t.

Me? I’m hoping that we get two very good flms and tat they both deserve to earn over $1b and do so. Not sure I care which does better, although MArvel Studios are doing good things and need Avengers to be a big hit more than WB,; who can and will pump unending cash into their Dc movies (although it seems only the Batman films have been much good of late) whereas Disney are doubtless waiting for any excuse to gobble up Marvel Studios and turn their movies into more little kid friendly movies.

Let’s not wish financial ruin and poor movies on 1,00s of workers and millions of fans just because you’re a little miffed with something a former junkie said eh?

      • Co

        F U.

      • steven

The avengers will be a disappointment if it doesn’t earn over a billion dollars? Gee, your logic is screwed up there. First of all, nobody expects the Avengers to earn a billion dollars, as very few films in history ever reach that mark to begin with. Secondly, I think the only thing that fans expect from it is a decent story line, lots of action, and for it to be success at the box office. If the movie makes a profit of say around 500 to 700 million worldwide, then it will be deemed a success by any film’s standards…unless Marvel plans on making “The Avengers” one of the most expensive movies of all time.

Whereas “The Dark Knight Rises”, I think you can make a bigger argument that people will consider it more of a bust if it doesn’t generate a billion dollars in addition to strong critical and audience receptions. Granted, I think it would be unreasonable for any fan to expect the same kind of success the last movie did, but you know many people will do it anyway.

The problem with the last batman movie is that it set the bar for itself so freakishly high that if doesn’t at least match or best the last movie, then it’ll be deemed a failure in some fans’ minds, as you have to wonder how do you top a film that was deemed arguably the greatest superhero film ever made?

don’t get me wrong, I have faith in Nolan, and I trust the story will be every bit as great as the last two films, but I doubt it’s going to set record sales like last time.

    • Chang

You’re the Kevin Keegan of geekdom.

    • steven

The reality is that “The Avengers” will be the highest grossing superhero movie next year mainly due to a novelty. Seriously, if Stallone’s “Expendables” film can become a hit because of an all star action hero cast of the 80’s and 90’s, then you know the Avengers will generate even more success based on it’s novelty of bringing together all these superheros on screen. However, in terms of story value, I think “The Dark Knight Rises” will have the superior story, and it’ll probably be a lot more well received among both critics and audiences than the “Avengers” will be.

    • Phil

Only a dumbass fanboy would take the success of a movie personally. RDJ is allowed a personal opinion just like everybody else. I’ll give you an example: I think the Dark Knight is incredibly overrated and probably owes most if it’s success to the death of heath Ledger. Inception on the other hand is just really really stupid. There’s an opinion for you.

    • The Dark Knight SUCKED

The most overrated movie of the decade.

      • Justin Poppiti

        Of the decade?? REALLY????

  • EMB

Is Mark Ruffalo auditioning for a Zoolander sequel? Blue Steel!

    • Marc

    • Co

How did he get the part?

    • Jiminy

      My first thought was “Sprockets.”

  • Maguire

Scarlett Johansson is really gorgeous and very talented. It’ll be an exceptional performance, just wonderful.

  • the_girl

these photos of Jeremy Renner are really flattering. In other news, I am looking forward to seeing the banter between Hulk & Iron Man.

    • UGH

I was wondering when they switched Renner with Jason Bateman.

  • strickens girl

Sweet zombie jesus I can not wait for this movie to come out!!!!

  • NCIS-Spidey

Now if only Marvel Studios could get the rights for Spider-man away from Sony! Then maybe we would FINALLY see the first PERFECT Spider-man film!!

  • Stephanie

Black Widow is my absolute favorite Marvel character… I hope she’ll get her own film!!

  • CyEf

    Oh Yeah!! I’m so excited!!!

  • Brett

Ruffalo looks like he’s sucking on a Jolly Rancher at the same time that somebody passed something that smelled really nasty under his nose – while at the same time, he was being asked to name his second grade teacher.

    • Antoinette

He looks like a werewolf to me. Which is kinda the same thing I guess. LOL

  • Jeremy

If only Edward Norton was back! I hate Ruffalo!!

    • Cap

Let’s face it: even Edward Norton is a great actor, he’s a douche.

      • Co

        So are you a douche.

    • DDubSolider

Stop hating on your cast members Jeremy. Ruffalo is from my state so I’ll stand up 4 a fellow Wisconsinite even though he looks like he’ll brutally kill my hopes of him looking good as hulk…yeah he looks horrible horrible horrible. The others looks okay.

    • Justine

O.M.G!! I must have that cake pan! Both of my boys are into super heroes right now. And to be honset so am I with all the hottie actors playing the super heroes these days lol.
