Sony sent shock waves through the film industry when it announced yesterday that, starting in May 2012, it would no longer subsidize the cost of 3-D glasses for its releases.

Understandably, the bold move has many parties concerned. After all, someone has to pay for the hordes of expensive frames.

But according to the National Association of Theater Owners, exhibitors don’t want to be the ones to do it! NATO has just issued a rather disgruntled response. Check it out below: READ FULL STORY »

Meet Elizabeth Olsen, star of 'Martha Marcy May Marlene' and youngest Olsen sister -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

We all grew up with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. But it’s exciting that we now have another Olsen sister we can watch grow into a bona fide star. And, winning raves for her role in the Cannes film Martha Marcy May Marlene, Elizabeth Olsen is well on her way to becoming one of the industry’s most talented darlings.

In EW’s exclusive video, the youngest Olsen talks about her upcoming film — about a woman (Olsen) who attempts to flee a cult — and being at a point in her young career where her work is screened in front of Hollywood’s best and brightest. “I’m just really enjoying the first time of everything, like getting to go to Cannes,” she says. “Like, that’s crazy.

She may look like an Olsen, but, judging by the Martha Marcy May Marlene clips in EW’s exclusive video, she certainly can distance herself from her family’s kiddie legacy. See the clip below:  READ FULL STORY »

Starting next summer, you may have to pay for those disposable 3-D movie glasses if you want to watch The Amazing Spider-Man or Men in Black III in three dimensions.

Sony Pictures confirmed to EW that the studio would stop footing the bill for 3-D glasses starting in May 2012. Each pair of 3-D glasses costs studios around 50 cents to purchase, which can result in a pricey $10 million invoice for a blockbuster film. (The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.)

Two years after police in Zurich led Roman Polanski away to prison, the Oscar-winning director returned to a very different reception in the city, where he wrapped himself in applause and recognition Tuesday night by picking up a cinematic award and releasing a “memoir” of his life that had been treated like a state secret.

The Polish-French director of Rosemary’s Baby, Chinatown and The Pianist took the stage of the Zurich Film Festival to finally accept the lifetime achievement award that he was unable to pick up in 2009, after being arrested for the decades-old sex-crime case.  READ FULL STORY »

'Butter': TWC launches viral campaign site for 'white, tall, and pretty' Jennifer Garner

It would be difficult to miss the election metaphors sprinkled throughout Butter, the Jennifer Garner comedy about a contentious Midwestern butter-carving contest, but the Weinstein Company is building its entire marketing campaign around the film’s political themes. At the Toronto Film Festival, where the movie premiered, Harvey Weinstein created a stir when he invited Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann to co-host the film’s Minnesota premiere. Now, TWC has launched a campaign site for Garner’s Bachmann/Sarah Palin/Hillary Clinton inspired character, Laura Pickler, who ultimately sets her sights on the governor’s mansion. “I’m sorry that I was born white, and tall, and pretty,” Pickler says in a clip, which is surely an ironic t-shirt waiting to be sold. Take a look. READ FULL STORY »

New NSFW 'Human Centipede 2' trailer: 'He keeps on talking about a centipede... with 12 people!'

Human-Centipede2-Martin

The new trailer for horror sequel Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) has just hit the Internet and we can reveal that it includes footage from the first film, an actual centipede, and a gentleman who seems to have borrowed his beard from Billy Gibbons’ hairier brother. Oh, yes, and it also features a bunch of people who are clearly about to have their mouths attached to someone else’s rear end, but we figured you probably knew that already. (If, on the other hand, you’re a Human Centipede newbie then welcome to our coverage of this franchise. You’ve presumably come for the “What the blue blazes?” But you’ll stay for the “Argggh! Make it stop!”)

'The Lion King 3D': Is it the dawn of the 3-D reissue?

the-lion-king

It only takes one surprisingly successful film to spark a new Hollywood trend. For instance, the breakout 2009 hit The Hangover paved the way for the eight R-rated comedies that were released this summer. The unparalleled grosses of Avatar motivated studios to start shooting everything in 3-D — or at least convert their films to the third dimension after the fact. And now, thanks to the unexpected box-office dominance of Disney’s The Lion King 3D, we may have a new craze to anticipate and/or fear: the 3-D rerelease. READ FULL STORY »

Steven Spielberg's 'War Horse': See the new poster -- EXCLUSIVE

As Steven Spielberg puts the finishing touches on War Horse for its Dec. 25 debut, EW presents a first-look at the poster for the World War I drama. A new trailer will debut next week in front of DreamWorks’ Real Steel.

Spielberg decided the make the film after his longtime producer and friend Kathleen Kennedy saw a production of the critically beloved play in London, which utilized surprisingly soulful wood-and-leather puppets as the lead animals. But before the director jumped on a plane to see it for himself, she gave him the book that inspired it, a 1981 young adult novel by Michael Morpurgo. At that point, he says he was already sold.

Interestingly then, the poster for the PG-13 film seems to specifically echo the imagery from the book’s cover. The stage play took the first-person (or first-horse) perspective of the book a step further by broadening the story of Albert (Jeremy Irvine), the British farmboy who sees his beloved pal Joey sold to the war effort, only to find himself sent to the front a short time later. Albert longs to somehow find his friend again, a perhaps naive wish that slowly falls away amid the horror of war.

So in War Horse‘s one-sheet, we see the addition of the boy to the frame. They aren’t together in the core of the film, though you could argue they’re never far apart in other ways. Click through to see the full image:

Kevin Costner drops out of Quentin Tarantino's 'Django Unchained'

Kevin-Costner

Kevin Costner has dropped out of Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming spaghetti Western-cum-period-slavery-picture Django Unchained, EW has confirmed. His role as Jonathan Kent (Clark Kent’s human father) in Man of Steel, and his upcoming History miniseries The Hatfields and McCoys, meant Costner’s schedule became too crowded. (Deadline first reported the story.)

Costner had been cast as Ace Woody, a ruthless trainer of male slaves pitted against each other gladiator-style in a ranch owned by the main villain, Calvin Candie, to be played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Jamie Foxx will play the title character, a former slave whose wife is Calvin’s captive. Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson round out the cast.

No word yet on who will replace Costner.

UPDATE: Kurt Russell is in talks to take on the role.
