Octavia Spencer has had the breakout year of a lifetime, earning Oscar buzz and glowing critical acclaim for work in The Help, but now it looks like her 2012 could bring some stiff competition. Mandate Pictures announced via release on Monday that Spencer has joined the cast of Oscar-winning Juno scribe Diablo Cody’s directorial debut. The film is based on Cody’s original screenplay, and will also star Russell Brand and Footloose star Julianne Hough.

The comedy follows Hough’s character, a formerly sheltered young woman who loses her faith after a devastating plane crash and decides to head to Las Vegas to experience a new slice of life. On the way she meets Brand and Spencer’s characters, and they inadvertently help her discover her “true self.” Mandate president Nathan Kahane (50/50) will act as execute producer alongside Cody, with Mason Novick (500 Days of Summer) set to produce. Production is slated to begin next spring.

Just the other night, Justin Timberlake told David Letterman that he couldn’t seem himself in an old-fashioned movie musical. But what about a Coen brothers music movie? A source close to the production confirms to EW that Timberlake has been offered a role in Inside Llewyn Davis, the Coens’ upcoming film about the 1960′s New York folk music scene. (Variety first reported the story.) Oscar Isaac (Drive) has already been cast as the lead, a struggling musician, and Timberlake could play another folkie who’s romantically involved with a woman, reportedly to be played by Carey Mulligan.

In related casting news, Coen brothers’ favorite John Goodman (The Big Lebowski, Barton Fink) is in talks to join the production, though a deal has not yet been reached.

As part of last week’s announcement that he had shot a feature-film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing in secret, Joss Whedon and his wife Kai Cole also announced the formation of Bellwether Pictures, a “micro-studio” designed to mount tiny-budgeted indie films. EW has confirmed that Bellwether is underway on its next project, the “supernatural romance” In Your Eyes. (Deadline first reported the project.)

Scripted by Whedon, the film “tells a metaphysical love story about two seemingly polar opposites who are deeply connected in ways neither could have ever imagined,” according to a statement. READ FULL STORY »

Hilary Swank has fired her manager, Jason Weinberg, and two of his CAA associates, four weeks after she was paid to attend a Chechen gala event that celebrated the birthday of Ramzan Kadyrov, the Russian-backed Chechen president who’s been accused of numerous human right violations. Swank apologized and vowed to donate her appearance fee to charity, but the London Independent reported that the embarrassing blunder ultimately led to the dismissal of Weinberg, who’d been the Oscar winner’s agent for eight years. Swank is reportedly staying with CAA, though, where her boyfriend Jason Campisi is employed. In an email, Swank’s spokesperson confirmed that Swank “has made several changes to her team.”

In the main acting categories, Rebecca Hall (The Awakening), Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre), MyAnna Buring (Kill List), Olivia Colman (Tyrannosaur), and Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk about Kevin) are facing off for Best Actress, while Brendan Gleeson (The Guard), Neil Maskell (Kill List), Fassbender (Shame), Gary Oldman (Tink Tailor Soldier Spy), and Peter Mullan (Tyrannosaur) are in the running for Best Actor.

Larry the Cable Guy on Mater backlash: 'As long as John Lasseter's laughing and smiling and thinking it's funny, I'm good' -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

By any criteria, Cars 2 was a fabulously successful sequel, but that didn’t stop nitpickers from downgrading the Pixar film for its decision to build a spy thriller around Mater, the dimwitted tow-truck voiced by comedian Larry the Cable Guy (née Daniel Whitney). Lightning McQueen’s loyal sidekick’s shift into leading-truck status fueled a $551 million global blockbuster, and LCG isn’t about to apologize for that. “As long as I’m doing the voice and John Lasseter’s laughing and smiling and thinking it’s funny, I’m good,” says Larry. With Cars 2 out on DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow, Nov. 1, the Blue Collar comedian and host of the History Channel’s Only in America talks to EW about how Mater became a star and his reaction to the film’s critical reception. Then, in an exclusive clip from the Cars 2 Five-Disc Combo pack, the filmmakers explain why Mater was the perfect character to keep us laughing in the world of espionage.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Going back to the first film, did it feel like Mater was originally written with your voice in mind?
LARRY THE CABLE GUY:
John Lasseter heard me on the Blue Collar CD and he said, “That’s the voice. That’s the voice of Mater.” I mean, if anyone would know Mater’s voice, it’s John, because he’s the guy who thought him up. But I remember when I was doing some shows in San Francisco, all the Pixar animators came out to watch me and we had a great time after, so I think they pretty much [made the character] from that. I went in for a six-hour voice session, but I think I only had like 25 lines. But they really liked what I had done with the character so they ended up rewriting a bunch of the movie. I just kept going back, seven or eight times, until we finally got it. And then we were at a party afterwards and John went up and said what a good job I did with Mater. It was really cool. I’m very thankful. READ FULL STORY »
