John Singleton sues Paramount and MTV Films

Oscar-nominated director John Singleton is suing Paramount Pictures and MTV Films for a minimum of $20 million under his claim that the studios breached a 2005 contract, EW has confirmed. Singleton alleges that the companies reneged on a promise to finance and distribute two of his films in exchange for distribution rights to Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan. Singleton says he sold them the rights to Hustle & Flow for a reduced $9 million fee in exchange for their promise to back and greenlight two forthcoming features budgeted on or under $3.5 million. After Hustle & Flow‘s tremendous success (the film netted an Oscar for Best Original Song), Singleton claims his increasingly complex negotiations with Paramount forced him to to pass on deals with other companies and, thus, negatively impacted him financially.

In response to Singleton’s suit, Paramount issued a statement today: “Paramount was hoping that John Singleton would produce two more pictures before his agreement with our studio ended in 2010, but that did not happen. Instead, he went on to direct Abduction for Lionsgate. Paramount fulfilled all of its obligations and his claims have absolutely no merit.”

Marijean, I respectfully diasgree with you on #2. That’s a great list, but it only includes big employers, and most small cities don’t have many of the companies on the list. I work for an employer not on the list. Do I like my job? Yes! Was I able to take off enough time after the birth of my child? Umm, kind of it is never enough, but my paid leave was generous compared to my prior employer, and most of my mom-friends’ experiences. Is my work life flexible enough to accommodate my family life? Yes. My company, and my supervisor in particular have been allies in balancing my work and family. But most importantly, my job has allowed me to stay in my hometown, where I have parents and a great support system built-in. Limiting my search to just the 100 best would leave me with slim pickings and an almost guaranteed move away from the people who are my day to day support in parenting.Better advice would be to look at the list, read about the practices of these family-friendly employers, and then look for those qualities when you seek a job. Negotiate things like a reduced schedule and flex time up front during the hiring process. Talk to other employees about their experiences with the company. It’s very possible to have a satisfying experience as a working mother even if you stray from the list.Amen to #1 and #3!!

Singleton has been tapped to direct my screenplay for Universal with principle photography to begin shooting in February. It’s about a fledgling songwriter named Florence who gets drawn into the world of crime and drugs in her south LA ‘hood. it’s called Lyrical Flo. Title song to be performed by IUD featuring L’il Wangk.

Good luck to you. I hope it’s a success.

Paramount has an awful reputation. They always seem to be f’ing over talent.

John Singleton = One hit wonder…
I remember after Boys In The Hood he was labeled as the next Spike Lee. Nope! I can’t remember a movie since that he has made that was in any way enjoyable.

    • R. Cohen

John Singleton is NOT a one hit wonder!! John has done Shaft, 2 Fast 2 Furious, 4 Brothers, Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan, Higher Learning, Poectic Justic! What The F Have You Done?! And He Is Better Then Spike Lee & His Films Have Made More Money Then Spike!! He’s Also A Graduate Of The Prestgious USC Film School! He Should Stand Up For Himself Since Paramount F’d Him!
