Box office update: 'Paranormal Activity 3' earns $8 million from midnight showings

Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 3 earned an estimated $8 million from midnight showings at 2,200 locations last night.

That puts the fright-fest 30 percent ahead of Paranormal Activity 2, which scared up $6.3 million from midnight shows last year and ultimately earned $40.7 million in its first weekend.

Yesterday, I predicted a $41 million weekend for PA3, and while that number is still a likely target (due to sequel frontloadedness), if the film can keep up this kind of momentum, it could  be looking at a $46 million opening frame.

i wanna have Ryan Gosling at my side when I scream tee-hee! right EW?

    • Brian

If you go to any page on Ew Ryan Gosling is always on your side, EW will never give up on him, or Glee, or Twilight, or Lady Ga Ga, or Footlosse, or Darren Criss, or former American Idols contestants, or parks and Rec..because according to EW that is all we want!

      • Michael

Don’t diss Parks and Rec. It’s my new Arrested Development.

      • Brian

And dammit EW will not let you forget it!

      • My Opinion

Honestly Parks and Rec is a good little show, but not as good as Community or Raising Hope, or at least not as funny!

      • LOL

Parks and Rec > any other comedy on TV

      • Tracey Bluth

Parks and Rec is not even having a good year!..it is nowhere near as good as Arrested Development, and should not be mentioned in the same sentence!

  • The Gosling Effect

Look to your right!…he is always there!

  • jeff

What does any of this excesive trolling have to do with the article on Paranomal Activity 3? Did eith one of you even bother to read it before commenting?

    • Brian

Yes Paranormal 3 made some cash blah blah, I just get distracted everytime I come on here and have to see that damn pic of Ryan Gosling with a look of constpation on his face!

      • moasey

“Not a flaterring pic”???Whaaaa? Ryan Gosling doesn’t take unflattering pics! lol

      • Lizzie

Well he did this time, it is a horrible Pic!

  • jeff

You know, I DO have to agree with you there – ha ha

  • Candyman

I just saw PA-2 on netflix. What is it about silence that evokes fear? I’m looking forward to the 3rd installment.

  • katey

i’m sorry, but am i the only one that doesn’t have a problem with the little added bonus that is ryan gosling on the side of the screen whenever i read an ew article? i can think of far worse distractions.

    • Brian

But hey Katey, even you must admit that it has been up for 4 months now, and it is not even a flattering pic, the look on his face is like he has a bad case of food poisoning or something, I think it is time to move on!

    • Tracey Bluth

I am a female and think Ryan is a hottie, but even I have to admit he looks like he needs to take a dump in that pic!

  • katey

p.s. paranormal activity 3 definitely looks spooky!

  • LOL

    America loves crap. Again.

  • Jay

Found footage from 1988 should be 4×3 and look like VHS, not widescreen and digital. Just one of many reasons why this movie eats from top to bottom

  • jpratm

DONT WAISTE YOUR MOVIE THIS CRAP !!!!! Go rent Insidious, The Others, Rosemary’s Baby, The Thing (82), The Shining instead

    • Jose

The Shining was boring and is a horrible adaption of the great Stephen King novel. Rosemary’s Baby’s and The Others were so laughable and Insidious had some horrible acting. The Thing is the only movie on your list that’s actually scary, and learn to spell waste!

      • Carrie White

Are you really going to call someone out for spelling, so our last post and you mispelled “Margin”…Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” and Roman Polanski’s “Rosemary’s Baby” are classics in the horror genre, the only thing that is laughable is your ignorance of true classics..ill agree that “Insidious” does not belong on the list though!

      • Carrie White

      • Phil

When I used to work in Tower Records, around Halloween & customers would ask me for horor movie recommendations I’d always tell people to go buy The Changeling (1980) NOT the Angelina Jolie movie! Its creepy as all get outs!! And always surprised when Halloween rolls around and its not somethign a channel like AMC shows ! Happy Halloween !

      • Jose

Are you seriously not over the last post? Wow something is wrong with you, do I have a stalker?

And I stand by what I say, Rosemary’s Baby was probably scary back then but it doesn’t hold up , I couldn’t even get through half of it!

And The Shining is one of the worst literary adaptions ever! There was nothing scary about it.

Stanley Kubrick’s movies are self-indulgent crap. “The Shining” is no different, and it certainly is NOT scary.

    • Get Real!

You are an idiot, probably not smart enough to understand Kubrick, his films will live on way past your death, what have you done othe than to make snide comments on a message, your ignorance is astounding, obviously you know nothing about film, proably think Adam Sandler’s films are classic, so enjoy yourself in your trailer you inbred waste of a life!

      • Get Real!

        *probably!

    • Lizzie

Jay the only taste you have is in your mouth, and that is probably even bad!…you are a loser!

  • Juan

What happen to everything from the commercials? None of the best scenes were shown tonight here in MD? Highly upset just saw the preview on tv and that was more exciting at the same time upsetting. Still a good movie I must say. Any feedback please? I want my $ back!

    • Mike from Kansas

I was saying the same thing last night to my friend after we saw the movie. There were parts from the trailer that weren’t in the movie like the male expert they invite who gets tossed at the table (he wasn’t even in the movie!), the little girl jumping from her room down to the first foor, the shot of the house engulfed in flames, the mom getting dragged to her room and thrown onto the bed, and the girls together in the bathroom with the camera saying “Bloody Mary” (that was probably just a teaser for the trailer)…

Great article. I cant wait to hear more about your research tool. If it is as good as your other products, then you will have another winner. Your article pretty much summed up what I have been seeing too. Great to see some hard data.
