Coen brothers target Justin Timberlake for 'Inside Llewyn Davis'

Just the other night, Justin Timberlake told David Letterman that he couldn’t seem himself in an old-fashioned movie musical. But what about a Coen brothers music movie? A source close to the production confirms to EW that Timberlake has been offered a role in Inside Llewyn Davis, the Coens’ upcoming film about the 1960’s New York folk music scene. (Variety first reported the story.) Oscar Isaac (Drive) has already been cast as the lead, a struggling musician, and Timberlake could play another folkie who’s romantically involved with a woman, reportedly to be played by Carey Mulligan.

In related casting news, Coen brothers’ favorite John Goodman (The Big Lebowski, Barton Fink) is in talks to join the production, though a deal has not yet been reached.

    Ha to the JT haters!

    • Hal

I trust these guys in what ever they do. I have not seen a bad Coen Brothers film yet. Regardless of the actor they will bring the most out of them.

  • Jered

Since it’s the Coens you can guarantee it’ll a billion times better than that crap In Time, Timberlake would be insane to turn this down.

  • Nelly

This guy keeps getting job offers? LOL

  • Ash

Stop trying to make Justin Timberlake happen as an actor! He needs to focus on his music, most people I know like his music, but hate his bad acting. His girly voice doesn’t do well in movies.

  • LOL

    The Coen Brothers love crap.

    • fdsds

Well, that is what they’re known for. Not for winning four Oscars, a Palme D’or, or making several American classics. Nothing like that.

      • LOL

Oscars and crap are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

      • fdsds

That’s true, but winning 4 of them says something. And if it doesn’t say something, give them the “making several American classics” part.

My comment got deleted. Interesting. Apparently it’s unacceptable to talk smack about Justin Timberlake in a public forum. Anyway, he’s no actor. Some people accepted his mediocre turn in The Social Network, but he sank the dramatic scenes he was in, and basically coasted on his charisma. He is AWFUL in In Time. Zero emotional range. It’s disconcerting to me how filmmakers keep casting him when there are plenty of talented up-and-coming actors who aren’t getting roles. He has no credibility as an actor and as much as I love the Coens, if he has a prominent role I might have to skip it.

Yeah. The only JT I want in a Coen Bros movie is John Turturro!!! And I know Steve Buscemi is busy, but i’d love to see a cameo by him as well! Please, Coen Bros, don’t lose your indy cred by joining the pop star bandwagon. Continue your tradition of casting true actors and not worrying about finding people that are blandly cookie cutter pretty. I just don’t picture Timberlake being able to pull off “folk singer” vibe believably. If they do decide to try and cast him, I hope they make him audition for it first to make sure he can fit the part.

Just Friends and In Time flopped with major hype. He sucks as an actor.

    • by the way

Friends with Benefits didn’t flop at all. And In Time isn’t flopping either, it’s just underperforming. Neither of those movies had “major hype.” The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has major hype, if you want an example.

  • Tye-Grr

JT does not suck as an actor. I don’t get the hate. I think people just have preconceived notions of him and they can’t look past that when they see him in films. He was great in ‘The Social Network’ and has been very good in past movies like ‘Alpha Dog’, and I think he did a solid job in ‘Friends With Benefits’ as well. I look forward to watching him branch out with great directors like The Coen’s.

  • Captain Obvious

“He was great in ‘The Social Network…’”
Passable at best. People give charismatic stars a free pass – if an actual actor had been cast in the role and given the same one-note, flat performance, he would have been criticized left and right. But since it’s a music star people are predestined to like, he gets off for simply not outright sucking. A pat on the back for trying. It was the weakest performance in the film & stuck out like a sore thumb. His acting in In Time is indefensible. I’s his first role that required playing something other than a slight variation of himself, and it’s clear that he’s out of his depth.

    • jj

Exactly. He needs to take some acting classes, but mainly it’s his flat high pitched vocal delivery that holds him back as an actor. The best actors have range because they are able to make the vocalization of a character different each time, not just their facial expressions. A vocal (not singing) coach would do him wonders.

      • a

Yeah…vocalization different each time… as opposed to the bad actors, like Gene Hackman, Tommy Lee Jones, Robert De Niro, Denzel Washington, etc. Oh wait…

  • Captain Obvious

It’s not his voice that bothers me, it’s his inability to deliver a performance with any semblance of depth or believability.

    Ooh! Oscar nomination!

  • JT’s Hype is Hilarious

I have no issues with Justin Timberlake ( besides his enormous ego ) , but his acting is awkward & wooden . Plus, he has no chemistry on the big screen. After In Time & Friends With Benefits, JT has proven he is not a leading man, and he just cannot carry a film on his shoulders.

  • Amy

Sounds interesting. I’d really like to hear Justin Timberlake sing actual music *cough cough*. I like him a lot as an actor, less so as a singer.

  • Tim

Never cared for Justin Timberlake, but I’m sure the Coen Brothers are casting him for a good reason.
