There are many things one could say about indie film provocateur Harmony Korine (Gummo, Mister Lonely, Trash Humpers), but “Disney Channel director” is hardly one of them. And yet EW has confirmed that Selena Gomez (of Disney’s The Wizards of Waverly Place) and Vanessa Hudgens (of Disney’s High School Musical), along with Emma Roberts (of Nickelodeon’s Unfabulous), are all in talks to join Korine’s next film as a writer-director, Spring Breakers, about a quartet of college co-eds who hold up a restaurant so they can make it to Florida for their spring vacation.

James Franco, meanwhile, is attached to play a drug and arms dealer who bails the women out of jail, only to try to get them to murder his enemy. (Variety first reported the story.)

Of course, Hudgens and Roberts have moved on from their teen-cable-TV days with grown-up fare like Sucker Punch and Scream 4, respectively. But the project would mark a significant departure for Gomez, even though she would play the least daring, most religious member of the group.

The film is scheduled to start filming in Florida during spring break next year.
