New 'Brave' photos released: Great Scots!

Tags: ,

Back in March we got our first look at Brave, Pixar’s upcoming fairy tale set in the sweeping, mystical Scottish Highlands. Today, new photos were released, prominently featuring the latest addition to the Pixar family, including the film’s heroine, a tomboyish, fire-haired princess named Merida (voiced by Boardwalk Empire‘s Kelly Macdonald).

Check out the image below, in which Merida — who brings chaos to her kingdom when she defies a sacred custom and must make things right — comes across a Wisp. While it’s hard to take your eyes off of the beautiful blue orb that has Merida transfixed, take note of the stones around the princess. Brave‘s producer Katherine Sarafian explained to EW regarding the stones, which can be seen on the poster, “Those stones are actually a pretty important set in the film. We can’t say what happens there, but they were inspired by an actual location in Scotland that we visited multiple times during our research. It was a very powerful setting for the kind of things we want to have happen in the story.”

Merida doesn’t look quite as enthralled in this still, as she sits bored on the throne, sandwiched between her parents, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) and King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and triplet brothers, Princes Harris, Hubert, and Hamish. (Conan O’Brien’s got nothing on those ginger locks!)

Of course, Connolly’s King Fergus isn’t the only gigantic gent in Brave. As evident by this photo, which features the hulking Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), the amusingly-named Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane), and the boorish Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson), sporting some battle paint rather reminiscent of Braveheart.

Brave, which is directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, arrives in theaters on June 22, 2012.
