It was a surprising but compelling choice when Marvel Studios hired Patty Jenkins, best known for the 2004 Charlize Theron drama, Monster, to take over the next installment in the Thor franchise.

Now it looks like she won’t be joining forces with the superhero after all. Sources close to the production say the filmmaker, who also made the acclaimed pilot for AMC’s The Killing, has parted ways with the production over unspecified creative differences.

It’s doubtful this will cause much delay in the production of the sequel. The film, which is set to begin filming in the late spring, is still in the very early stages. Last week, star Chris Hemsworth said he had met with Jenkins and discussed her vision of the film, but had not yet received a finished script. He is currently finishing Snow White and the Huntsman and will jump straight into the Ron Howard-directed Formula One racing drama, Rush.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously told EW that the sequel would “take Thor literally to other worlds.”

“It will primarily be the journey of that character, of he and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), and how the new dynamic with his father (Odin, played by Anthony Hopkins) is working out, as well as what are the broader stakes for The Nine Worlds,” Feige said.

The Nine Worlds are the different planes of existence, of which Earth is one, that Thor and his Asgardian brethren recognize. It’s part of a push to expand the cosmic side of the Marvel Comics universe, which includes many more intergalactic heroes and villains.

There is no word yet on a possible replacement for Jenkins, who was taking over the franchise from Kenneth Branagh. The release date for Thor 2 is set for Nov. 15, 2013, and the hammer-pulverizing hero will next turn up in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers on May 4, 2012.
