David Cross isn’t being sent out to sea without a life raft by the producers of Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, despite his statements in recent interviews in which he has described his experiences while filming the kiddie threequel as “miserable,” “unpleasant,” to downright “awful.” On Monday night, the comic urged Conan O’Brien’s audience not to see the film — which has grossed $112.4 million so far — and crudely disparaged an anonymous producer of the film with a bigoted remark, causing some insiders to speculate he was referring to Janice Karmen or Ross Bagdasarian Jr.

Cross took to his Facebook page on Thursday morning to clear up any misunderstandings (telling fans in a post titled “Please know this” that Karmen is not who he was referring to during his Conan visit) and make an official apology. “Janice and Ross were never anything but warm, giving, and gracious to me.”

It seems the feeling was mutual between Cross, Karmen, and Bagdasarian. In fact, Bagadasarian, the son of Alvin and the Chipmunks creator Ross Bagdasarian Sr., had nothing but positive things to say back about Cross, when EW.com spoke to him regarding his reaction to the star’s comments. “David is a really smart, funny, edgy comedian, says Bagdasarian, who runs Bagdasarian Productions, the company behind the Chipmunks. “You can’t tell him what to say, good, bad, or indifferent. And honestly, we would never attempt to do that. We’re just thrilled that he’s been as special in these films as he has.

“Our whole family loved Arrested Development and watched it religiously from the first episode, and we’re such fans of David. He’s so darn funny. We were thrilled beyond belief to get somebody who was smart and made that character of Ian Hawk as funny and as fresh as David did, and that was quite honestly why we wanted to bring him back for each of the movies. He always brought something unique and funny. For us, he really helped give these films an edge that we always wanted.”
