Sundance 2012: 'Robot & Frank' lands a distribution deal

“I want one!” was a sentiment expressed by many moviegoers who saw Frank Langella’s sci-fi crowdpleaser Robot & Frank at the Sundance Film Festival.

Now Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and Samuel Goldwyn Films have one.

The companies partnered Wednesday on a distribution deal for the movie, which is a near-future tale about an ex-con old-timer who bonds with his Siri-like mechanical caregiver and recruits it to be his accomplice on a few last heists.

The movie was directed by first-time feature filmmaker Jake Schreier and written by another relative newcomer, Christopher D. Ford, both of whom are now getting serious attention from Hollywood, along with the production company that made it, Park Pictures Features, which started operations only in July.

“This winning film strikes a special chord with audiences, and we are delighted to bring Robot & Frank into the Sony Pictures family. Jake’s film shows us a future that is right around the corner,” Matukewicz said.  “And I, for one, can’t wait for my own Robot!”

No date was set, and the pricetag for the sale was not immediately available.

“Our team fell in love with this clever, irreverent story anchored by Frank Langella’s indelible performance,” said Meyer Gottlieb, President of Samuel Goldwyn Films. “Jake has done a remarkable job and we are thrilled to continue working with talented first-time filmmakers. We look forward to partnering again with our friends at Sony on a title we know audiences will flock to in droves.”

Robot & Frank co-stars Liv Tyler and James Marsden as Langella’s distracted children, who get him the appliance-robot to help cook his meals, wash his clothes, clean his house, and make sure he’s taking his medicine. Peter Sarsgaard provides the Hal 9000-type voice of the robot, while Susan Sarandon plays a librarian who finds herself the target of Frank’s charms.
