'The Bourne Legacy' teaser: Is Jeremy Renner the new Matt Damon?

The Bourne Legacy is one of the most intriguing gambles of Hollywood’s summer 2012. The Bourne films were an essential piece of mid-aughties blockbusterdom, with Matt Damon’s amnesiac assassin the perfect action hero for the anxious post-9/11 era. But Damon and Paul Greengrass, who made the latter two Bournes, both decided to pass on doing another movie. Enter Tony Gilroy, who wrote the Bourne trilogy but famously disliked working with Greengrass. (In a fascinating New Yorker profile, Gilroy referred to Greengrass’ treatment of his Bourne Supremacy screenplay as “a crime against the gods of storytelling.”) Gilroy wrote and directed Legacy, which stars Jeremy Renner as a new secret agent on the run. The just-released teaser introduces Renner as “Kenneth Kitson from Reno,” a wounded soldier who joins the top-secret superspy-creating government program that also created Bourne. Chases and sniper rifles ensue. At one point, Edward Norton says “Jason Bourne was the tip of the iceberg,” which is both a handy plot description and a power-of-positive-thinking prayer currently being recited in the boardrooms of Universal Pictures. Check out the trailer and let us know what you think about the new Bourne.
