Sullivan Stapleton, the Australian actor from Animal Kingdom who currently stars in Cinemax’s terrorist action-drama Strike Back, will star in 300: Battle for Artemisia, the working title for Warner Bros.’ followup to the 2007 smash, 300. In the original film from director Zack Snyder, Gerard Butler played the heroic Spartan leader, Leonidas, at the Battle of Thermopylae against the giant Xerxes. Though initial reports had Stapleton pegged for the Xerxes role in what is being termed a “parallel story” — not a sequel nor a prequel — EW can confirm that he’ll instead play Themistocles, a general in the Athenian army who battles Xerxes.

Noam Murro (Smart People) is directing and Eva Green will play the pivotal role of Artemisia.
