Five years ago, Knocked Up costars Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel appeared in a short film-cum-spec trailer called Jay and Seth Versus The Apocalypse. The movie found the playing-themselves pair waiting out some nightmare-ish, post-apocalyptic scenario in a ratty apartment and bickering like foul-mouthed, near-future versions of Oscar and Felix from the Odd Couple. (Rogen to Baruchel: “Every time I think about how scary it is out there I listen to you speak and I think, ‘Maybe I should walk out that door and let whatever’s out there rip my f—ing head out through my a–hole, that’s better than listening to Jay for five more f—ing minutes!'”) The clip ended, tantalizingly, with the words “COMING SOON” but little has been subsequently heard of the project…
…until now. A full movie version of the short, entitled The Apocalypse, is due to start filming this spring in New Orleans. The directorial debut of Rogen and screenwriter Evan Goldberg (50/50, Knocked Up), the film will star Rogen, Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, and James Franco who, in this version, spend the post-apocalypse hanging out at Franco’s mansion. “The movie takes palce in large part inside some huge, crazy, L.A. house,” says Baruchel. “It’s going to be a bunch of crazy sequences, a bunch of crazy special effects, a lot of the trademark ribald humor that this group is known for. It should just be fun as hell.”
So is Franco’s house in the movie an exact replica of his real-life abode? “F—ed if I know,” laughs the Canadian Baruchel. “I’ve known Seth since I was 18 years old. I’ve known Evan since I was 19 or 20. Franco, I’ve only met once or twice. What I’m saying is, I have no idea what his house looks like.”
Baruchel will next be seen starring opposite Seann William Scott in the ice hockey comedy Goon, which he co-wrote with Goldberg and is available on VOD from this Friday.
