'Chernobyl Diaries' trailer, a.k.a., 'The Russian Meltdown Massacre'

Anyone can make a horror movie where the audience roots for the hot young things to escape the boogie man. But there’s another subgenre of cinematic horror, one where you’re actually begging for the protagonists to suffer the most grisly fate. Take Chernobyl Diaries, the next movie from Oren Peli, the man behind Paranormal Activity. In it, a bunch of young American tourists in Russia skip the delights of Moscow for an opportunity to visit Chernobyl — you know, the infamous power plant in Ukraine that was declared a radioactive wasteland after the 1986 nuclear meltdown. “Have you heard of extreme tourism?” says Paul, the smart guy you can’t wait to see devoured by some three-eyed orphan with a tail. Stupid Americans.

Chernobyl Diaries opens in theaters May 25.
