Before her performance as Kristin Wiig’s kooky roommate in Bridesmaids, Australian actress and comedian Rebel Wilson was a virtual unknown to most audiences stateside. That will not be a problem by the end of this year. EW has learned exclusively that Wilson is joining the pumped-up cast of Pain and Gain, director Michael Bay’s true crime drama about a cadre of bodybuilders who become embroiled in a kidnapping and extortion plot that does not end well. Wilson will play Ramona Eldridge, who winds up in prison for her involvement in the scheme. She’ll star opposite Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Ed Harris, Tony Shalhoub, Anthony Mackie, and Rob Corddry in the Paramount production, produced by Bay, Ian Bryce, and Donald De Line. The film marks Bay’s first non-Transformers project since 2005’s The Island, and is set to start shooting in Miami this spring.
Wilson is set to appear in at least four other films this year, including the ensemble romcom What to Expect When You’re Expecting, the Sundance hit Bachelorette, the coming-of-age dramedy Struck by Lightning, and as a voice in Ice Age: Continental Drift. She’s also starring in the comedy Pitch Perfect, about an all-female college a cappella group, and has a supporting role in the gritty black comedy Small Apartments, which premiered this month at SXSW.
As if Wilson wasn’t already busy enough, she’s headlining the CBS comedy pilot Super Fun Night, produced by Conan O’Brien, about “three nerdy female friends on their ‘funcomfortable’ quest to have super fun every Friday night.” She also may be inventing a perpetual motion engine as a fun side project — we can’t be sure.
