Can you imagine Ganon from The Legend of Zelda saying this? Or Bowser from Super Mario Bros.? Or the centipede from… Centipede?
It’s literally in their programming for video game villains to be troublemakers, but in the new trailer for Walt Disney Animation’s Wreck-It Ralph, the smash-loving antagonist in an 8-bit 1980s arcade game decides to prove there is more to him than just 25 cents worth of mayhem. Of course, it creates tremendous controversy in their pixelated world.John C. Reilly voices Ralph, a big-fisted behemoth who pulverizes a building for a Mario-esque hero (30 Rock‘s Jack McBrayer) to repair in the game Fix-It Felix Jr. It turns out game characters can travel to each others machines via the electrical plugs, and when the pressures of villainy become too much for Ralph to bear, he sets off on a quest to prove he can be a hero.
That takes him through various familiar worlds, including a gruesome Halo-type first-person alien shooter (where he encounters a terse commander voiced by Jane Lynch), and a Mario Kart-type racing game set in an all-candy world (where he is annoyed by a tiny Strawberry Shortcake wannabe voiced by Sarah Silverman.)
You’ll also see the Bad Guys Anonymous meeting EW wrote about at CinemaCon in April, featuring a number of genuine video game villains, among them Pac-Man‘s Clyde, Sonic the Hedgehog‘s Dr. Robotnik, and Zangief, the surprisingly philosophical bruiser from Street Fighter II. (For a more thorough breakdown, see this gallery of the authentic video game Wreck-It Ralph cameos.)
