Whether you think Fifty Shades of Grey reads like a fun guilty pleasure or like the subtitles of a bad porno, you have to admit you’re a little curious about how Hollywood aims to translate the slobbery romance and explicit sex in the novel to the big screen. They already have one volunteer to help — one who has plenty of experience with novels about gleeful sexual degradation. Bret Easton Ellis has taken to Twitter to express his interest in penning the screenplay for the book’s big-screen adaptation. He’s even put forward an ideal director: David Cronenberg, with whom he previously worked during the early stages of American Psycho.

Of course, signing one or both of these guys to the project would presumably change the concept from silly bathtub-and-scented-candles reading material to a disturbing examination of social dry rot and anomie. It’s hard to imagine that this will be an easy sell to producers, who won’t want to alienate the built-in audience of female readers they’re hoping to reach. E L James’ novel is the fastest-selling book of the year, after all, and Universal has already doled out millions of dollars for the movie rights.

At the moment, Easton Ellis is currently working on another film which he penned, starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen. Actually, now that I think of it, maybe he’s already secretly adapting the book as we speak.
