Rock of Ages – in theaters June 15 — made the transition from the Broadway stage to the silver screen. But how well does the film translate? In the latest episode of “Movie Talk With Owen and Lisa,” EW critics Owen Gleiberman and Lisa Schwarzbaum agree that Ages fumbled the move.
“The two romantic leads are so toothless and bland, this movie made me wish I was watching Zac Efron and Miley Cyrus,” Gleiberman says. “I would have forgiven all of that if this movie delievered the music. If the musical numbers were good — they’re not. That’s the problem.”
“Every single scene of this movie was imitation. It was dead. It was an idea of an idea of what it’s like to take a stage show and to make it about an idea of the ’80s,” Schwarzbaum adds.
