When I think of Sean Penn’s most unsettling cinematic creations, I’m inclined to learn towards his cruel Vietnam sergeant in Casualties of War or his death-row inmate in Dead Man Walking. But his character in This Must Be the Place might just take the cake. In this Cannes 2011 film, slated for release on Nov. 2, Penn plays a former goth-pop god who hasn’t given up the iconic look that helped make him famous. When his father — a Holocaust survivor — passes away, he inherits the mission to track down his dad’s concentration camp tormentor. But it’s not just Penn’s heavy makeup and lipstick that make his character feel a tad off — it’s the monotonous locution that makes it seem like his brain synapses aren’t fully recovered from a lifetime of hard living. It’s as if Ozzy Osbourne was portraying Simon Wiesenthal.
