'We Need to Talk About Kevin' director's sci-fi 'Moby Dick' film gets funding

Lynne Ramsay, the director behind last year’s dark, twisted film We Need to Talk About Kevin, which deals with the relationship between a mother and her psychopath son, is on board to direct a science-fiction project loosely based on Herman Melville’s also dark and twisted 1851 classic novel Moby Dick.

Besides Ramsay at the helm, with her Kevin co-writer Rory Kinnear also penning the script, the project, titled Mobius, is being financed and produced by Scott Steindorff and his company Scott Pictures, with Ramsay co-producing, Scott Pictures and Ramsay’s agent confirmed to EW. Scott Pictures is also producing Ramsay’s upcoming western Jane Got a Gun, scheduled to start filming in January with Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender.

Instead of Moby Dick‘s plot centered on a sea captain enraged by a violent whale, Mobius will juice up the premise within a futuristic, deep-space setting. In the film, “a captain consumed by revenge takes his crew on a death mission fuelled by his own ego and will to control an enigmatic alien,” according to Scott Pictures.

“Lynne Ramsay is one of the most talented directors of our time. I’m excited to be making these two films with her, and hopefully more,” added Steindorff in a press release. Steindorff, who has co-produced such movies as The Lincoln Lawyer and The Human Stain, founded Scott Pictures this year. “Love her. She is a creative genius… Totally unique perspective,” Steindorff gushed to EW.

Given Ramsay’s penchant for working with such strong, smart, and fierce performers as Tilda Swinton, who starred in Kevin, Mobius‘ captain and crew will have major acting chops. Maybe Andy Serkis, already creepily convincing as creatures Gollum and King Kong, can take on the role of the alien being pursued out of revenge.
