The man who fights for truth, justice, and the American way — a criminal? That’s the provocative suggestion in the newest poster for Man of Steel, which hit the web on Monday. It features Henry Cavill as Superman, flanked by U.S. soldiers, his wrists bound together in handcuffs that you know he could accidentally snap in half if he so much as got the hiccups. Check it out below:
The image bolsters the duality in Superman that Man of Steel appears to be striving for, a duality first presented in the film’s twin teaser trailers, identical save for the narration provided by our hero’s two fathers: Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), who sees real darkness in his adoptive son’s enormous abilities, and Jor-El (Russell Crowe), who only sees the possibility of accomplishing wonders. This poster would seem to suggest that as far as the U.S. government is concerned, a man who’s faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound isn’t someone we want just running around willy nilly.
