Five years after the release of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer — which was a real movie ,and not just a nightmare you had after drinking too much Vitamin Water — Fox has announced an official release date for a Fantastic Four reboot. The film is currently slated to hit theaters on March 6, 2015. If that date holds, FF would kick off a year jam-packed with superteams: Marvel’s Avengers 2 has colonized May 2015, while Warner Bros. is racing to develop a Justice League movie for later that summer. Disney is also prepping Star Wars: Episode VII for a 2015 release, which means that 2015 will be the geekiest year in movie theaters.
There’s no casting information available yet about the new Fantastic Four. But the project does have a promising director: Josh Trank, who made Chronicle, an idiosyncratic don’t-call-them-superheroes superhero movie. There are persistent rumors that Fox will try to tie the new FF into the continuity of the studio’s X-Men series, in an attempt to craft a Marvel Studios-esque cinematic universe where the Fantastic Four and various X-Men keep on teaming up for some reason. There are no rumors that Fox will also attempt to unite the Fantastic Four universe with the Alien and Planet of the Apes franchises, which is too bad, because can’t you just see The Thing partnering up with Caesar the Ape to take on the Alien Queen?
