Paramount Pictures announced late Friday that tomorrow’s planned world premiere of the Tom Cruise thriller Jack Reacher has been postponed “due to the terrible tragedy in Newtown Connecticut, and out of honor and respect for the families of the victims whose lives were senselessly taken.”

Based on the pulp thrillers by author Lee Child, the PG-13 film opens with a random shooting in a public place as seen through a sniper’s rifle. To be clear, the movie was filmed over a year ago, and the plot otherwise has no real connection to today’s horrific school shooting. But that opening sequence still could be seen as unsettling just a day after an all-too real public shooting rocked the nation.

The red carpet celebration was supposed to take place in Pittsburgh, where the film was largely shot. Paramount has not yet set a date for the rescheduled event, but the film will still arrive in theaters on Dec. 21.
