Andy Samberg on hosting the Spirit Awards and what's up his (ripped-off) sleeve

With the Film Independent Spirit Awards looming on Saturday, Feb. 23 (IFC, 10 p.m), Andy Samberg has been rigorously preparing to shine as the host. Make that rise and shine. “It’s actually filmed at 1:30 in the afternoon, so I’m slowly trying to change my sleep schedule,” says the SNL vet and star of Celeste and Jesse Forever. “Every standup worth his salt will tell you that the best comedy happens at 1:30 p.m., so I’m looking forward to that. Other than that, just trying to eat right, do a lot of crunches and yoga, and get my body and mind right and in tune with one another so I can come out and really dominate the stage, which I’m told is very shallow.”

On why he’s hosting
“I got interested in doing it because I saw Seth Rogen’s monologue last year and I thought it was so funny. I was like, ‘That’s a fun show.’ It would be fun to do jokes about movies that don’t always get the attention necessarily because they’re not as big as the ones nominated for Oscars. And I always watch them every year anyway, so it just worked out that they asked.”

On his plans for the ceremony
“We’re going to do stuff that is indie film-appropriate but has some good energy. We’re hoping to have a little more pre-tape fun, which is kind of my m.o…. Anyone who doesn’t know what the movie Keep the Lights On is will by the end of the show.”

On whom he’s looking forward to seeing at the Spirits:
“I’m looking for photo ops with a few people. Quvenzhané Wallis comes to mind if she’s around… I like to think if she wins [the Best Female Lead trophy for Beasts of the Southern Wild], she’ll just float out of her seat and fly to the stage with her angel wings. I have a secret wish that she would walk up to the podium and have the voice of the baby from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. It’s like, ‘Oh, it was a ruse! She duped us all!’… [Matthew] McConaughey should be in the house. He’s nominated [for Killer Joe]. I’m anxious to see all the weight he’s dropped for whatever he’s shooting now. I hear that’s like a modern marvel. A lot of my favorite directors are nominated. It’ll be cool for me to be in the same room as Wes Anderson. I’m a longtime massive fan of his movies. Hopefully I can impress him by making fun of his wonderful work.”

On the showdown between Moonrise Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook, which each have a Spirits-high five nominations
“I have no dog in this fight, as the great Mel Gibson said. I do love both of those movies, but again, keep your eyes on Keep the Lights On. Find out what it is and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. Could be this year’s sleeper. Also Bernie and Beasts of the Southern Wild are both really good. As far as I’m concerned, [the Spirits are] as good as the Oscars, if not better.”

On one guarantee he’ll make about this year’s Spirits
“I guarantee that you will hear the clank and clack of silverware on plates as everyone gets a full meal during the show. I’m hoping they keep those audience mics wide open so we can hear the light laughter mixed with the cutting of steaks and maybe some sort of polenta. We’ll have to wait and see. That’s another one of the big surprises — the unveiling of the menu.”

On his attire
“When the invites go out, they say it’s ‘California casual.’ I have no idea what that means. I’m probably going to wear a tux with the sleeves ripped off. Maybe I’ll look like a guy who once was incredibly successful and was wearing a tux but now has fallen from grace. It’ll kind of look like when the Hulk goes back to being Bruce Banner and somehow part of his clothes stayed on.”

On how he will ensure that Celeste and Jesse Forever will take home the Best First Screenplay award
“I’m definitely paying everyone off on that one. Doing any kind of favors, yard work, and/or things in the bedroom — whatever people on the committee need to make sure that [co-writers] Rashida Jones and Will McCormack take home steel. I want good hardware on their mantles by the end of the night, or I should say by 3 p.m., which is when the show will end.”
