Oscar votes are in, so there are only a few days left to learn everything you can about this year’s nominated films before the winners are named.

In this episode of ABC’s “Behind the Ballot” interview series, EW’s Geoff Boucher chats with a panel of experts about Sound Mixing and Sound Editing

“The sound editor would be the person who gathers the elements and presents them to the mixer to organize, as a cinematographer would hand their shots to the editor to compile into a completed film,” said Mark Mangini, who worked on Star Trek, The Fifth Element and Die Hard: With a Vengeance.

Aaron Glascock (The Town, Good Night, and Good Luck, Insomnia) explains that the sound of jingling keys might have a certain sound — a “musical signature” that is required, even if it is different than the keys you actually see. The pitch could even be chosen to match the music.

Joining Mangini and Glascock are Willie D. Burton (Dreamgirls, Panic Room, The Shawshank Redemption) and Steve Cantamessa (Ray, Tropic Thunder, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) and Dean Zupancic (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Tangled, Pulp Fiction).

So what makes a winner? A movie that pays attention to detail, and uses sound to enhance the story where dialogue may not.
