Fans of Nicolas Winding Refn’s neo-noir Drive, you’ll definitely want to take a look at this preview. A new red band trailer, released Wednesday, provides the latest peek at Refn’s second collaboration with Ryan Gosling, Only God Forgives.
The crime thriller, set and shot in Thailand, stars Gosling as Julian, an Englishman who thrives in Bangkok’s criminal underworld. Already living with plenty of enemies as he runs his family’s drug smuggling operation, things get even more complicated — and more bloody — in Julian’s life when his mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible for his brother’s recent death.
The new preview doesn’t get quite so gruesome and profanity-ridden as many red band trailers out there, though it still features a few hard-to-watch moments. But go ahead and hit play if you want to see some ruthless Gosling under moody red lights, backed by the music of Thai group Proud (which, with its lullaby-like music box, is rather unsettling when juxtaposed with Refn’s signature stylized acute violence). Check it out below:
Only God Forgives opens in theaters on July 19, 2013 — and it looks like we’ll have to wait till then to hear Gosling’s English accent. The film is one of two recent projects that has Gosling reuniting with a favorite director — The Place Beyond the Pines, which started its limited release last week, re-teams Gosling with Blue Valentine writer-director Derek Cianfrance.
