Casting Net: Jada Pinkett Smith to star in bilingual pic; Plus, Hailee Steinfeld, more

• Jada Pinkett Smith is set to star in and co-produce a new drama for Overbrook Entertainment — the production company that she started with Will Smith. Entitled La Escribana de Uraba, the film tells the story of a journalist reporting on the murder of an employee of a multinational corporation and will shoot in Colombia this fall. Smith has not been on screen all that much lately, but is producing both After Earth and Will Smith’s directorial debut, The Legend of Cain.  [Variety]

• We noted the negotiations last week, but it looks like Brad Pitt is officially staring in the WWII drama Furywhich was just acquired by Sony Pictures. David Ayer (End of Watch, The Fast and the Furious) will direct. [Deadline]

• Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) has signed on to join Tommy Lee Jones in his new Western The Homesman, which he also co-wrote and plans to direct and produce. Jones has lined up a cast of heavyweights for the film including Meryl Streep, John Lithgow, Hilary Swank, and James Spader. In the film George Briggs (Jones) and Mary Bee Cuddy (Swank) team up to take transport three insane women from Nebraska to Iowa. [Deadline]

• After his memorable breakout in The Impossible as the stoic older son, Tom Holland has joined the cast of Ron Howard’s In The Heart Of The Sea, starring Chris Hemsworth. The adventure film is an adaptation of Nathaniel Philbrick’s non-fiction book about a sperm whale that attacks and destroys a South Pacific-bound ship in the 19th century. The surviving crew drifted for 90 days. [Deadline]

• Noah Emmerich (The Americans) has joined the cast of Jane Got a Gun to play Natalie Portman’s character’s estranged outlaw husband. Just to keep things straight, when Emmerich’s character is beaten by a gang led by Bishop (Bradley Cooper), Jane Hammond (Portman) decides to hire her ex Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton) to help protect her farm. Emmerich and Portman have shared the screen before — in 1996′s Beautiful Girls where he shames Timothy Hutton’s character for having a crush on a then-13-year-old Portman. And now he’s playing her husband! [Deadline]

Harry Potter alum Tom Felton has boarded the cast of Ghosts of the Pacific, a World War II drama about a flight crew that crashes and must survive in the ocean on a small lifeboat. [Variety]
