2014 may seem like a long time from now, but studios are already filling their slates and shifting around release dates for later this year and into next. Below, a few of the latest release date changes:
The Expendables 3, the latest in the Lionsgate franchise that has rounded up action heroes of the ’80s like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, is set for an Aug. 15, 2014 release, the same late summer weekend that the first two Expendables films opened in 2010 and 2012. Nicolas Cage, Wesley Snipes, Jackie Chan, and Milla Jovovich recently began final negotiations to appear in the threequel.
Another Stallone/Schwarzenegger flick got a new release date: Escape Plan (formerly titled The Tomb) has shifted its release date for a second time. Now slated for Oct. 18, 2013, the prison escape movie was previously set for Sept. 13 after originally being scheduled for Sept. 27. The new October date puts Escape Plan up against Joseph Gordon-Levitt-directed and -written Don Jon, the Chloe Moretz-starring Carrie remake, and fantasy movie The Seventh Son.
Liam Neeson-starring thriller Non-Stop also shifted its release date (again). Following Universal’s initial announcement last week of a Feb. 21, 2014 debut, the studio has bumped the movie by one week, to Feb. 28, 2014. Non-Stop features Neeson as a U.S. Air Marshall on a transatlantic flight, where he receives a series of cryptic text messages demanding that he instruct the government to transfer $150 million into an off-shore account — until he secures the money, a passenger on the flight will be killed every 20 minutes.
