It’s no secret that Warner Bros. hopes that Man of Steel will lead into a whole shared-universe of DC superhero movies, culminating in a mega-spinoff team-up Justice League film. It’s also no secret that Warner Bros. wants that Justice League movie to feature Batman, by far the most popular superhero in the DC lineup thanks to the Christopher Nolan trilogy. Much has been speculated about whether Justice League would tie into the Dark Knight films — which, after all, were incredibly popular.

But no less a source than David S. Goyer, co-writer of the Dark Knights and writer of Man of Steel, appears to have scotched that idea. In a new interview, Goyer notes that Man of Steel director Zack Snyder has said that Bruce Wayne exists in his movie’s universe, but notes, “It would be a different Bruce Wayne from [Christopher Nolan’s] Dark Knight trilogy.” In short, despite the fact that Nolan is heavily involved with Man of Steel, don’t expect an appearance by Christian Bale in Justice League. (Or Joseph Gordon-Levitt, for that matter.)

Goyer goes on to explain that any future DC movies will depend on Man of Steel‘s box office performance. “Warner Bros. has hopes that there will be more Man of Steel films, and that this will be the beginning of a shared universe,” he notes. “We could meet Batman, or Wonder Woman, or the Justice League in these movies. But they all hinge on box office reception.” (And if Man of Steel underperforms, it’s entirely possible that Warner Bros. will back a truckload of Downey Jr. Money into Christian Bale’s driveway.) Still, this seems like fairly concrete evidence that Warner is planning a full-fledged Caped Crusader reboot. Let’s tentatively call it The Amazing Batman.
