Casting Net: Halle Berry boards indie comedy; Plus, Angelina Jolie casts lead for 'Unbroken', more

• Halle Berry has decided to stay small for her next project. The Oscar winner (for Monster’s Ball) will take on the independent comedy Mother, about a woman who escapes life with a mobster by pretending to be the mother of a young guy she meets on the run. Emilio Ferrari (I Know What You Did Last Winter) is directing the project. According to the report, the film will be tonally similar to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Berry most recently starred in the modest thriller The Call, and is currently filming X-Men: Days of Future Past where she’s reprising her role as Storm. • Angelina Jolie has found a lead for the adaptation of Unbroken that she’s directing in young British actor Jack O’Connell. The film, already set for a Dec. 25, 2014 release, tells the story of Olympian and World War II prisoner of war Lou Zamperini. The biopic, based on Laura Hillenbrand’s novel, will cover the period between Zamperini’s stint on the United States track team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics to his WWII plane crash in the Pacific and his two years in a Japanese prison camp. O’Connell plays James Cook on the show Skins, and is currently filming 300: Rise of an Empire. According to reports, he beat out Dane DeHaan for the role. [Variety]

• Johnny Depp is soldiering on post-Lone Rangerand may have found a fresh, interesting role that doesn’t require any makeup. He’s in talks to star in Mortdecai, based on the characters Kyril Bonfigloilo created in The Mortdecai Trilogy. The film will follow the plot of The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery which follows Charlie Mortdecai, a snobbish art dealer and occasional thief, as he tries to retrieve a stolen painting that may contain the code to a Nazi bank account. The project would find Depp re-teaming with his Secret Window director David Koepp. Best known for his work as a screenwriter, Koepp (Jurassic Park, Mission:Impossible) did a rewrite of the original adaptation which was written by On the Line scribe Eric Aronson. • Krysten Ritter (Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23) is set to star in Jake Hoffman’s (Dustin Hoffman’s son) directorial debut Asthma, about New York’s indie rock scene. Albert Hammond, Jr. of The Strokes (and, incidentally, son of the singer-songwriter Albert Hammond) will also appear in the movie as himself. [Deadline]

• Remember that creepy, but sweet-at-heart kid who played Emily Blunt’s troubled son in Looper? The 7-year-old actor’s name is Pierce Gagnon and Zach Braff has just cast him as his son Tucker in his Kickstarter project Wish I Was Here. [Deadline]
