Regular readers of EW.com will know Elijah Wood recently enthused to yours truly about his upcoming horror-comedy, Cooties, which the Wilfred and Lord of the Rings star described as concerning “a zombie virus which effects pre-puberty children.” Well, on Friday, it was announced principal photography on the film will begin in the Los Angeles area on Monday.

Cooties is being directed by the commercial-directing team HONEST (aka Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion) and co-stars Alison Pill, Rainn Wilson, Jack McBrayer, Jorgé Garcia, Nasim Pedrad, and Insidious writer Leigh Whannell, who penned the script with Glee co-creator Ian Brennan.

According to the official synopsis, the movie is “a cautionary tale of a school lunch program gone horribly wrong. Cooties tells the story of a young girl who eats a chicken nugget infected with a virulent disease. She begins to transform into a violent, murderous flesh-ripping juvenile who transmits the disease, which only affects the pre-pubescent. As it quickly spreads, the teachers find themselves trapped in the school, faced with a horde of rampaging adolescents, and must come up with an immediate lesson plan to save their very lives.”

Wood plays a substitute teacher and is also one of the producers on the film, along with Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller, the actor’s partners in his new horror film company SpectreVision. The terror flick-loving Wood recently starred in the slasher film Maniac, which is now available on VOD. You can check out the Maniac trailer below.
