It probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that Oscar winner Morgan Freeman can play anything well — and yet it’s still a delightful surprise to see him passed out on Kevin Kline on a slowly rotating bed in Last Vegas (in theaters Nov. 1)That’s what many round of vodka and Red Bull will do to a guy.

“Red Bull! Wow, what a rush,” says Freeman, 76, who stars in the buddy comedy about four friends loose on Las Vegas, alongside Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, and Kline. “I mean I didn’t drink vodka with Red Bull to find out what the rush was like. I’m scared of that because you know your heart gets going.”

Director Jon Turteltaub says that no one does a better imitation of a drunk person than Freeman. “I saw him give a five-minute toast to Michael Douglas at his birthday dinner and he did the whole thing as a drunk,” says Turteltaub with a laugh. “Of the five minutes, he probably spent three of them pausing. It was absolutely hilarious.”

Turteltaub says Freeman’s lighter side was one of the great surprises of filming. “I was scared of Morgan,” he says. “It was like ‘Oh no, Mr. Gravitas is going to be on my set and I’m going to get yelled at. And we just had the absolute best time and it was all smiles and giggles. Who knew?”
