Casting Net: Bobby Cannavale heads to 'Annie'; Plus, Patton Oswalt, Rodrigo Santoro, more

Fresh off a memorable turn as Sally Hawkins’ sensitive mechanic boyfriend in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, Bobby Cannavale is set to try out the world of big-screen musicals in Annie, in which he’ll star alongside Quvenzhané Wallis, Cameron Diaz, and Rose Byrne. He’ll play a political strategist who is helping Jamie Foxx‘s Benjamin Stacks run for mayor. Easy A director Will Gluck is taking another pass at the script before he begins shooting. The Emmy-winning actor (for Will & Grace) can also be seen in Lovelace; Jon Favreau’s Chef, alongside Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr.; and the upcoming Al Pacino movie Imagine. [Deadline]

The teens, zombies, vampires, and aliens pic Kitchen Sink has just picked up a few high-profile names in Patton Oswalt (Young Adult) and Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad). The ensemble cast includes Vanessa Hudgens, Ed Westwick and Denis Leary, and will be directed by Robbie Pickering (Natural Selection) off of Oren Uziel’s 2010 Black List script. [Deadline]

 Scandal‘s Gregg Henry is set to re-team with director James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy in an unknown role. He tweeted the news.

• Rodrigo Santoro, who played Karl in Love Actually, Xerxes in 300, and Paulo in Lost, is set to join Will Smith in Focus, about a con man who gets into a relationship with a young con in training (played by Australian actress Margot Robbie). Santoro’s character is also smitten by Robbie, which makes things more complicated when he hires Smith to come in and stage a con to help his Formula One team win. Crazy, Stupid, Love. directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are helming the project, which will shoot this fall in New Orleans and Buenos Aires. [THR]

• Tye Sheridan was an unknown when Terrence Malick cast him in The Tree of Life, but he seems to be building quite the career for himself. In addition to his recent turn in Jeff Nichols’ Mud and David Gordon Green’s upcoming Joe, the young actor is also in talks to join Charlize Theron and Chloe Grace Moretz in a key role in the big-screen adaptation of Gillian Flynn‘s Dark Places. • James Marsden (Lee Daniels’ The Butler) and Nick Frost (The World’s End) are in talks to join Vince Vaughn and Dave Franco in supporting roles in the Ken Scott-directed comedy Business Trip. [The Wrap]
