Casting Net: Brie Larson in talks to star opposite Mark Wahlberg; Plus, Amanda Seyfried, more

• Brie Larson, who has had a breakout year with leading and supporting roles in Short Term 12, The Spectacular Now, and Don Jon, is in talks to join Mark Wahlberg in the remake of The Gambler, the 1974 James Caan starrer that was loosely inspired by a the Dostoyevsky novella. It’s still very early in the process, but Larson would take on the role of a student who Wahlberg’s Jim Bennett, a literature professor, is in love with. Rupert Wyatt, who worked with Wahlberg on Rise of the Planet of the Apes, is set to direct. Oscar winner William Monahan (The Departed) is penning the script. [Deadline]

• Amanda Seyfried is set to team up with her Les Misérables foe Russell Crowe to play his daughter in Fathers and Daughters for Pursuit of Happyness director Gabriele Muccino. The story will alternate between the 1980s, when Crowe’s character Jake Davis is trying to raise his young daughter alone while struggling with mental illness, and the present, when Katie (Seyfriend) is still living in Manhattan and dealing with the traumas of her youth. [Deadline]

Bridesmaids co-stars Rose Byrne and Melissa McCarthy might be reuniting for director Paul Feig on the comedy Susan Cooper. Byrne, who can be seen in the box office breakout Insidious: Chapter 2, is in early talks to join McCarthy, who is set to star as the titular character who has been described as a “female James Bond-type.” Byrne is currently filming the big-screen update of Annie with Jamie Foxx. • June Diane Raphael, who co-hosts the podcast How Did This Get Made and starred in the Bachelorette-mocking web series Burning Love, will play Vince Vaughn‘s wife in the comedy Business Trip. [Deadline]

Blake Lively will return to the big screen after a short absence (her last project was 2012’s Savages) for the drama The Age of Adaline. The Gossip Girl vet will star alongside Ellen Burstyn in the story about a 29-year-old woman who stops aging and continues to have adventures through the 20th century. Lee Toland Krieger (Celeste and Jesse Forever) is directing. [Deadline]

O.C. and Southland alum Ben McKenzie has joined the cast of How to Make Love Like an Englishman, starring Pierce Brosnan and Salma Hayek. McKenzie is currently working on The Swimmer, about an American athlete who attempts to conquer a wild Norwegian river. [Variety]
