Talk about stealing someone’s thunder! Universal’s $17 million comedy The Best Man Holiday hammered Thor: The Dark World on its first day at the box office. Holiday, which stars Taye Diggs and Terrence Howard, grossed $10.7 million on Friday (its 1999 predecessor, The Best Man, earned $9 million in its entire opening weekend), which puts it on pace for a weekend right around $30 million. Moreover, the film garnered a rare “A+” CinemaScore grade from polled audiences, which suggests it may have major staying power in the days and weeks to come.

Meanwhile, Thor: The Dark World finished close behind with $10.5 million, but it should handily climb past The Best Man Holiday on Saturday and Sunday and finish the frame with about $37 million. That would give the $170 million Marvel film about $145 million after 10 days — with much, much more overseas.

CBS Films’ modest hit Last Vegas continues to demonstrate remarkable staying power at the box office thanks to its older target audience — a demographic that doesn’t usually rush to the theater on opening weekend. The film dipped just 22 percent from last Friday to $2.5 million, putting it on track for an $8.5 million weekend and over $46 million total against its modest $28 million budget.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa held strong in fourth place with $2.3 million on its fourth Friday. The $15 million Paramount film will only drop about 30 percent for the weekend, likely giving it a fantastic $7.8 million and $90 million total. Yeah, six times its production costs.

Rounding out the Top 5, the $55 million animated family film Free Birds gobbled up $1.8 million. Thanks to Saturday and Sunday matinees, Relativity’s sorely underperforming title (considering the complete lack of competition) may take in about $7.3 million this weekend for a total just above $41 million. Not a turkey, but not so hot, either.
