Talk to Sandra Bullock on the morning of her Best Actress Oscar nomination for Gravity and the first thing you hear is “Brush your teeth….now are you really going to brush your teeth?” That’s the 49-year-old Oscar winner encouraging her four-year-old son Louis through the paces of their morning routine. “You got to brush your teeth!” she tells EW with a laugh. “I don’t care who’s been nominated. Even the President has to brush his teeth.” Bullock is one of the few actors who wasn’t woken by a publicist or the television but rather her young son. “Yep,” she says happily. “It’s allergy season out in LA so we have big bouts of coughing and the inhaler at the crack of dawn.”

She isn’t the type to treat herself to a celebratory dance in the kitchen when honors like an Oscar nomination come her way. “I always feel like this is so out of my comfort zone that if I dance then I’ll be hit by a truck,” she says, sounding breathless. “I’m stammering a lot just because, I don’t know, I’m so grateful. I’m so grateful for the experience that I had on Gravity. My love for [fellow Oscar nominees, Gravity director and producer] Alfonso and David Heyman are just beyond. They gave me a once in a lifetime opportunity that they easily could have given to someone else because I’m a long shot.”

Meanwhile, after her son finishes brushing his teeth, one has to wonder if Bullock will share the news of her terrific honor. “Nope,” she says. “He doesn’t know what I do for a living. He just knows that Mom needs to get upstairs and get him dressed and that’s exactly the way it should be. It should be about his life, not mine. He doesn’t need the interruption of my vanity.”
